Hi all,
Not really from KY. but have been living here for 8 years now. I am more than half way through my fifties and still going strong. I have a small farm where I breed and raise sheep. I also have ducks, geese and of course barn kitties and dogs...
I love to spin, knit, cross stitch, rug hook, punch needle, garden ... well just about anything that keeps my hands moving!
You do know what they say about idle hands ... I also do a little blogging.

Hi Terri, I am from Somerset. There are a few of Farmgirls around here. We need to all get together one of these days.

Hi Teri - what kind of sheep do you raise? I have Shetlands but only a small spinners flock. I love to spin and knit too. Welcome to the forum.

Hi Sheri,
I have mostly Cheviots ... which pay for my spinners flock. I also have Shetlands and Border Leicesters ... This year I bred my Reg. Shetland ram with my reg. Cheviot ewe ... And I have the most amazing little creamy white with tan spotted ewe lamb Gypsy, I can't wait to see how her fleece turns out ...I LOVE to spin ... but sell most of my fleece to regular customers in hopes of saving for a drum carder. I love the Shetland breed don't you?
Thanks for the welcome.

Yes - I love my Shetlands. I really like doing the sheep to shawl (or sheep to sock as the case may be) - I like know the source up close and personal. I don't raise enough to sell - I only have 6 but that is plenty for me. The lamb sounds sweet! As soon as I get my garden through it's first weeding I will be starting to pick my fleeces, washing and then dying the wool ready for the winter spinning cycle. I don't spin as much as I'd like in the summer as I am just too busy! I picked 18 lbs of Strawberries this morning so they are waiting for me to process. I will freeze some and make jam with the rest. I still have Strawberries coming on strong - they are later than normal as we had a rather cool and wet spring. I think I am up to around 40 lbs. so far out of my patch.

Blessings, Sheri

Wow! hope you make jam. Mine did okay, but we had a late frost this spring and killed most of them. I did manage a few. My blackberries were overwhelming me this year! The weather has been so crazy this year, we are now in drought conditions, which really is hard, as my sheep are organic pasture fed. I don't do really any spinning in the summer I save it all for the fall and winter months.
Farming is a ton of work ... but I don't ever remember a time when I needed a sleeping pill to fall a sleep!
so nice to chat with you.

That's for sure! By the time it gets dark at 9:30, I am asleep on my feet. I try to roust myself early around 5:00 to 5:30 so I can get as much done as possible before it gets too hot. We have been lucky with the cooler weather but we are in a hot spell right now - it was 98 this afternoon. Four days ago it was in the upper 60's so it feels even hotter.

we have had temps in excess of 104 for days ...the sheep lay under the willows down by the pond ... the ground keeps them cooler. I lost one already from the heat.Love KY. but, the summers here are a bit much on my bigger sheep.
Off to bed, have a Dr. appointment in the early a.m. my golden retriever was playing and we both zigged when one of us should have zagged and hello, hyper extended knee. been on crutches for 2 weeks. had to do things that way.
Have a great night. hope we chat again
