Our sweet LaMancha doeling, Luna, always greets me by smelling my breath. None of the boys do this, only her. She does it everytime she sees me. Does anyone know what this means, or has had it happen to them?

Amy she is bonding with you, she LOVES you!! That is one of the first things that you do when you rescue a wild Mustang like my Mustang Sally.

I'm so busy I don't know if I just found a rope or lost my horse!

I don't know if there is any correlation but (in general not always) a nanny goat will bond with a kid as soon as they smell their own milk in the babies system. Same with cows and horses. And if you drink her milk maybe that is why?

Well this one made me very curious, so I did some internet research on your question. What I found out is that some Buck goats (not all of them) urinate in their mouth, on the back of their front legs, and "comb" it through their fur on their sides to make themselves smell even more. To a doe (female goat) that smell is wonderful. Goats make a face called "fleming" when they curl their lip up. The goat has urine on its upper lip. It curls it's lip back, then breaths out on it's lip. Then sucks the air back in and smells it. The goat is smelling all the hormones and whatnot in the urine. Bucks will also stick their nose directly into the stream of urine from a urinating doe and then make the face to smell her hormones to see if she is in season. Stallions also do the same thing. You can think of it as akin to a human breathing into their hand and then smelling the air to see if they have bad breath. So, my guess is she is just checking you out to see if you your breath has goat urine in it. Then she must recognize that you are a human and that you are female. Perhaps she is able to smell your pheromones. It is just so interesting!! I don't know if you have observed this "guy goat thing". Best to you. Just fascinating to a city farmgirl!

This behavior is shown by many of my animals here. There are a few things that I have also noticed. They also smell other animals mouths when grazing in multi feed pastures or country side - they then follow those who have found something special to eat. Also, if they find that you eat special things that are smell interesting to them such as peppermints, or a new toothpaste they will become very interested in your mouth. I have a Llama baby who has to smell my breath everytime he comes up to me and then once her is done he runs his soft lips over my cheek. Remember that smell is very import to animals and they gather so much information from that. Just make sure that you are not ill when you allow your animals to do this.

I've seen billy goats pee on themselves and stick their face in pee but I've never seen a stallion do it. That's sort of the cool thing about stallions they are more into showing off and courting the mare. It's pretty awesome to watch.
