Bear with me on this, I don't know quite where to start, so will jump in and hopefully, everyone can figure out what I'm trying to say!!
I have my free website in my sig on a few boards. I've been getting some emails about selling some of my wind chimes. I've sold a few locally but the emails seem to be from other states. A friend asked me if I was supposed to collect taxes for other states and all that. That wigs me out. Not that I want to lose any customers, but, criminy, all the tax stuff, it doesn't seem like a good idea...now.
Our booth at the consignment store is doing pretty well. But people have to come into the store to buy, no internet selling. I can take pictures to put up (like on FB, which I haven't done yet) but I don't have the headaches of tax stuff. Or is that the reason people 'do' Etsy and it's all figured out for you??
So, the upshot question is, without asking a tax person, are you supposed to collect the tax for other states and send it in??

As far as I've read, this is how it goes:
YOU are based in a non-sales-tax state just like I am. The item in question, whether in a local store or listed online, is IN that state when sold, and thus sold in that physical state. You have no burden to collect tax from others for their home state.
In internet sales, the only time sales tax is collected is when the item ships within the same state that has sales tax, OR in CA if the company selling the item has a warehouse/storefront in the state of CA (newer law).
You're good to go :)

Thank you!! That which you posted seems reasonable to me, but, when talking about taxes...well, you know, THEY aren't too reasonable when it comes to these things. I'd rather not sell online if it came down to tax problems. At least with the consignment booth, I don't have to deal with that stuff. Thanks again!

Well, this showed up in my email this AM.
Oh, and this just figures, doesn't it?? We marked a picture down yesterday, it didn't seem to have much interest. Then a lady walked by, not 10 seconds later, and said, "I love that picture. I've been wanting to buy it but the platter is leaning up against it, so I was afraid to move the picture." That is the SECOND time we've marked something down, only to have someone buy it immediately, something they've been looking for and a teeny reason kept them from buying.... Argh!!!!!

Well it says that Oregon isn't exempt in this?? I thought Oregon didn't have sales tax... Is that not true?
It does say that if you're not selling within a state that you are based in, you're off the hook...
Maybe you should just look up the Oregon state laws =/

Oh, yeah, OR doesn't have sales tax. I posted the link because I thought it was sorta funny (as in 'ha-ha') that I asked here, only to have a pertinent link show up in my email. The second part of my post, I thought it was funny/strangethewaythingswork that we mark stuff down, only to sell it moments later! Like the buyer couldn't have walked by 15 seconds sooner!! Heh....
