I have come across several pieces of what I think is tatting-I bought several linen "flats" at auction which included oodles of vintage, hand done, lacey edging etc. and I know what crochet looks like, but how can I visually identify whether a piece has been tatted? Is it finer than crochet?
more like sliding knots and small circles. Hard to describe in words. Look on the internet for pictures of tatting. Seeing some pictures will help you identify.

It's a little tricky-but I think what I have is crochet. The lady of the house did a lot of this fancy work-she never clipped the last of the strings on the majority of the trim so they weren't used at all, but I'll have to keep checking photos on line until I can learn the difference...from what I have seen it probably isn't tatting.
I'll have to post some photos of it CJ after the yard sale this weekend.
