I am so proud of my son. He is 28, single and he found a nest of rabbits that his dog dug up, He has nursed them on puppy milk until their eyes have opened and they are starting to move around. He is going to get them up to the age where he can turn them back into the wild. They are soooooo cute. I put pictures up at the blog. Just be careful. You are liable to go, "Awwwwwww." :-)

My gosh, they are so young. How long do you think it will take before they can be on their own? Will they know how to stay safe? I guess rabbits don't really know how to stay safe, just how to hop to safety. They sure are cute. What a lot of work!

Marianne, he figures that they were about a week old when he found them. He has been reading everything he can get his hands on about cottontails and according to everything, baby cottontails go off on their own at two weeks old!!! But a boatload of them get eaten too. So he is going to put them in a pen out in the back so they can learn to eat the grass and then turn them loose at the huge ranch of a friend of his. Lots of land for bunnies to run in up there in western Oklahoma.

Yup, you were right- the first "words" to leave my mouth when I saw those pictures was "Awwwwhhhhh".
Those little cottontails are very lucky that your son found them and was such a kind soul to bottle feed them.
Thanks so much for sharing the pictures and the sweet story!
Kudos to you for raising such a wonderful young man!
Hugs,

Once their eyes are open they will be very hands off

At this age they are very prone to having heart attacks...for what ever reason. So best of luck

Mary Beth,
That sounds like a great start for those little ones. So glad to hear they have a good chance of survival! I bet they feel like velvet.

OK I said "awwwwwww" everytime I saw another frame! hahahah Couldn't help myself! I just Loooooove bunnies!
My Mom raised one that the cat drug home, injured, when I was a kid. She kept him for quite awhile, named him Friskie,
even made him a tiny red leather harness from an old cat collar. She eventually turned him lose again. But he was one
well-loved and cared for little bunn until he healed and could be set free...a happy bunn story! hahaha
Thanks for sharing those MaryBeth!

Guess what I'm doing!! I'm feedin' the bunnies. Oh my gosh. They are soooo cute. Came up here to help the son tile a bathroom and the bunnies were a fringe benefit. I'm a cheap date! :-)

Years ago my husband and I were on vacation on Toledo Bend at my husband's families camp. My husband found a little squirrel, he said the momma pushed it out the nest because something was wrong with it. But I fed the little thing and made it a soft bed in a box. But it died a few days later. I named him Little Runaway. And was so sad. I wrapped him or her in a yellow washcloth and buried him by a little bush by the camp. I still think of him when I go up there. -Marlee

Thank you Mary Beth for sharing the story, I just love the way you write and I am like you so proud of your son...he sounds like mine...isn't it wonderful to know that even a big strong man still has a very gentle heart. Thank you for the pics, like everyone else I said awwwwww with every pic.....

Oh and I used my pie pan and first piece pie lifter for the first time yesterday, I made my very first rhubarb pie, never made or tasted one before...so good...but my favorite still by far is the pastry cloth...thanks again

So very cute. My daughter did that once and raised a couple on goats milk but she didn't release them soon enough and as it turned out it was 2 males and one of them killed the other one. But she released the other one and I could always tell which one was him cause he would sort of hang around. so fun!

Judy, actually, I can't take credit. That's my son's hand and I am taking the photo. He just has them totally calmed and they trust him. I think that they have imprinted.

Laura, thanks for sharing that. I will tell my son that he needs to be watching for any aggression before he lets them go.

Thank you Candace!! And just to let you all know, two of the bunnies have been sent out to fend for themselves. They were getting very fat and aggressive and were obviously ready to go. The others are still pretty small and are needing some encouragement. Maybe with the big ones gone, the others will be able to get plenty to eat.

Pleased to hear they are doing so well!

Look to see if there are any local rehabbers in your area and perhaps your son could take some classes through here and make it official!

Congrats!

They are all gone, Danielle. All grew up and left the nest. My son got them started on eating grass and leaves out in his yard and they took to it just fine. Taught them how to drink water from a puddle, etc so they should do great minus the coyotes, hawks and owls!! Nature is a tough place to live.
