'Hi all! I am going to begin adding a few sheep to my 'farmette' and am wondering what are your favorite breeds? I am looking for docile breeds for meat.

Thanks for bringing this up! Like I've read that some long-term prisoners do to keep their sanity, every day while I am toiling away at my corporate desk job I take a little mental break and make plans for my eventual retirement hobby farm. I know that I want to raise some sheep.
I've been thinking about sheep breeds too, but I'm thinking from a fiber perspective. I know that Rambouillets produce very fine wool, and that PolyPays typically have twins or triplets, and that Corriedale fleece is lustrous, so I'm thinking of some cross-bred sheep, but have no idea if those breeds are compatible or what the less-desirable qualities of each breed are.
Anyone with real experience that would like to speak to this topic?

I don't have a favorite breed but am interested to know as well . . . though I want a sheep or to primarily for wool too, bright meadow.
A friend of mine is going to start sheering her sheep and wants to sell her yarn online, I should ask her and see if she has an opinion.
I'm just a 20-something girl making a home for me (and my dog) and waiting for the family to fill it!

Ladies, I have sheep for their wool on our farm. I have shetlands which are very hardy and pretty easy keepers and they have wonderful wool. I did have polypays but their wool was not the greatest for spinning and I had issues with trimming their hooves more often than the others. My polypays always had twins. I have also had Corriedale and they are great. But the most gentle and finest fiber is the Border Leicester and Blue Faced Border Leicester. I can't tell you about the meat.
Oh, I also have some Oxfords and they are really large. I have pictures of the sheep on my blog. Go to the older blogs. Happy planning for that special flock.
