Since we were on the subject this week of Bella's donkeys and abscesses, I thought I'd take some photos of Prince's hoof as it progressed. He had been three-legged lame for about a week, and I kept checking his hoof every day for a sign that the evil abscess was breaking out.
On Tuesday, I got the first sign. At first I thought it might just be wishful thinking. Right at the hairline I started to see a hint of it.

Then on Wednesday, I got a big confirmation that my eyes had not deceived me. Right after I took this photo I put some SWAT on it to keep the bugs off.

Today, Prince was using all four feet again although not too gracefully, and the abscess was really showing. I expect his hoof will look really ugly as it grows out now, but I don't care, because he feels so much better.

Oh I am glad that it worked it's way out. It must have been terribly sore for him!

when it starts to grow out us can use pine tar to help speed it up a little. My Mare fever lined really bad 3 yrs ago and cracked around the hoof, it seemed to help grow it out faster.

Our mare still hasn't broke through like that yet and its been months. We are going to have her hoof xrayed. Vet thinks it might be a fracture instead.

Paula,

That's the way my "little man's" hoof looked when his abscess broke, but Prince's looks much angrier. His was just the crack in the upper hoof. I kept applying the iodine on a daily basis and it cleared up quickly. Oh, and I did try soaking Bella's hoof, but she didn't want any part of that. Even tried pouring the water (I added salts) over her hoof without success. Hope Prince is feeling much better now.
