I have an appointment to visit an alpaca farm on sunday. I worked with some llamas twenty years ago and it was the most rewarding job I've ever had. I've been feeling "stuck" in my current job so I decided to just start doing the things I love. And I love llamas and alpacas! So I'm going to visit this farm and she offers classes in spinning and some other activities. I need to get out of this rut and I think this will do the trick.

There was an article in Grit magazine this month about raising alpacas. They sound ideal. Although I've heard that the market is off a little on their fiber right now, so be sure and work some numbers and check the going rate for fiber and such before you take the plunge.
Here is the article:

I've been working on a business plan for a fiber farm starting with goats. I love our FarmGirl, Grace Gerber's concept. She has a ton of valuable knowledge about raising fiber and could really help you out. I found some old threads on this site that she started and it is worth spending some time reading through them. In fact I thought about resurrecting the thread and bumping it back up to the top to see who else was out there who could contribute to current fiber raising news:

I think I've found my bliss. I'm going to start volunteering to take the llamas/alpacas into the community--schools, nursing homes, parades, etc. I'm even considering buying an alpaca for fiber/therapy work and boarding it. I didn't realize how affordable it is. Why did i wait so long to do this? Sometimes I guess it takes feeling very unhappy in what you're doing (job) before you realize you NEED to do something that will make you happy. Life is too short to just do the things you HAVE to do--do the things you LOVE to do and it makes the rest more bearable. I've been collecting books and magazines and newspaper articles on llamas for years-I have an alpaca wool coat, a llama wool poncho and an alpaca purse--just didn't think I'd ever be able to incorporate my love for llamas into my current life. Now all that's about to change. I'm not ready to give up my job but I am ready to follow my bliss...wish me well!

Yesterday was a great day! I helped take the llamas and alpacas to a church in the state capital city and the kids (and adults) had a blast petting them, getting their pictures taken, etc. There were also two goats, some chickens, a bunny, and a family of ducks. People really do benefit from animal therapy. And I got paid for it as well, something I wasn't expecting. I'm going to try to do this on the weekends I have off. It's fun, it's rewarding (and I'm not talking about the money) and I learned a lot as well. I want to attend the show at the State Fair in August--hope I can get off work. I just love doing this kind of work (is it work? doesn't seem like it).
