Hi, I would love to make a rag rug but, am not sure how to do it. Does anyone have any instructions that they can share? |

Depends on what kind. You can tear strips off of any scrap cloth or cut it like you would for t shirt yarn and then crochet it, or you can braid it or you can set up a loom with heavy twine and weave it or twine around the other thread, another kind of weaving. If you crochet it, you can do a circle or oval. If you do an oval then you have to make sure that you add extra stitches for the curve, sufficient so that it lies flat and does not cup up or too many so that it ruffles. Depending on the size or the material used, sometimes you just have to experiment and maybe rip back a few rows when it is not lying as it should. I usually do not sew the strips together all at once, I sew them together when I change color or sometimes if the strip is short, will cut a hole in the end and feed the new one through that and a corresponding hole in the new strip and hook them together like hooking one rubber band to another. Hope that gives you somewhere to start.

If you decide to crochet strips of fabric, you might want to consider tying the pieces together instead of sewing them. I have been making rag rugs for nearly fifty years and this is the knot I use.

Phyllis, that is a really helpful diagram. Thank you for sharing! I was shown that technique when starting the toothbrush rugs. Never thought of using it for crocheting, etc.

I made a few rugs. I cut or ripped about 1 inch or a bit more wide strips, tied them together, rolled them into balls.

Great tips girls...I am slowly goint thru old shirts etc to cut up into strips to try this too..jus wasn't sure the rest of the "how"..did it years ago n trying to remember the rest...thanks to all who have shared and Delicia for asking....Nancy...love the rags balls jus like they are...pretty to display as we prepare til we get goin on the rugs..( whew.. not sure that made sense..lol..).

Phyllis, gr8t diagram...
I luv using sheets for my RR... if you cut the strips thinner (1") your rug will be softer... if you cut thicker strips ( 1 1/2 - 2") it will be stiffer and thicker feeling...
I prefer 1 1/2" wide strips.
I pre-cut my 1 1/2" in a row,,, about 3" long and then I just go back and start ripping the strips off...

That knot looks like it would work with my rugs on my weaving loom. If it's not too thick it looks like I won't have to sew my strips together anymore :)

EEeee! I want to make one! Good project to do while watching t.v. I bet, mom made them when I was growing up. Seems like you could take along with you and to do during down-time at work or while waiting etc. I've got a whole tote in the basement of nice cotton I'm thinking would work great. I'd like to start one tonight but in the middle of making a big pile of yo-yo's for a throw or small quilt.
