Arrrgh! I am so sick of getting bad haircuts! This latest on makes me look like a recovering chemo patient. I just want to cry. The latest MJF cover inspired me to let my hair go long. Mary Jane has such beautiful locks, OK I admit I am a wee bit jealous! I have very fine thin hair my scalp is starting to show in places; I picked up some vitamins for hair restoration and I have rogaine to help with the balding spots. I'm really starting from scratch here. Anyone else want to join me?

I'll join Tracy I've been growing mine for a couple of years now. I had such horrible experiences with hair stylists and swore off cutting (other than bottom trims, which I can get my hunny to do) I'm pleasantly surprised with how well my hair is doing, I have thyroid problems and a lot of women my age tell me that hair just doesn't grow well for a lot of older women, but mine is doing quite well aside from the life long frizzies.

I am perpetually growing out my hair! I have been trying since I was four to grow my hair long enough to sit on (the length my grandmother wore hers). Sadly, my hair is super-curly and never gets that far without the extra length coiling up.
I do have a suggestion, though, for the girls with fine hair: olive oil. Not the extra-virgin type, you need the one with more "oomph" to it. Use it as a hot oil treatment once a week. My grama used that for my aunt because she had really wispy hair as a child.

i've been using the same stylist for years. the last haircut she did 1 and half mos ago i almost cried..it was horrible! not sure why this happens. most of the time she does a great job, but every once in a while she messes it up. now my hair is getting long and i'm contemplating letting it grow. the ends need a snipping though. i just got mary janes mag yesterday and she looks beautiful! love her hair! connie

I finally decided that I'm through cutting my hair. It's long and though I wear it up or back, I wouldn't ever cut it again, just the bangs. When I brush it out it reminds me that I have finally learned to have patience with myself. My hair is very thin and fine but looks good up or braided. Thanks for the tip bout the olive oil treatment Alyce, I've got to try that. Susan

I quit cutting my hair years ago, I just trim the ends and wear it in a braid or put it up with sticks, all my resident at the nursing home think it is so funny to pull it when they wheel by!My hair is about the same length of MJ's. Good luck growing it out. Roxanna |

Thank you ladies for the tips and encouragement! My hubby will be happy when my hair is long; his is longer than mine at the moment. I have decided to not use artificial color anymore, there is still a box in my cupboard, but I will put it into my next donation box. I have some silver hairs starting to show, and I like them. It might be fun to post pics of our growing hair progress, what do you think?

Reading the above comments is why I keep my hair long. I would love to cut it, but like all of you mentioned; bad haircuts, etc.... I'll cut it just long enough to pull up or in a pony tail. Marly

Tracy, I have read that massaging your scalp helps hair to grown thicker and faster, so I started doing it last year and I believe mine is growing better. I had such a ugly hair cut last time I had it done, you have my sympathy! I also have quite a bit of silver in my hair and I'm actually wishing it would all hurry up and go that way. The silver grows on you after you get used to it

Yup... gave up cutting and coloring mine several years ago. It is still pretty fine, so I am going to try the olive oil and massage to see if that might help. I only trim my bangs myself. My husband or daughters will trim the back as it is down to my waist when not in a clip or a braid. And yes, I am definitely in the "silver" years of my life. Going against my mother who always said that once a lady goes gray she should have short hair. Not me, rebel to the end!

Mine is getting long also, about almost to my elbows. I let mine grow because I had to get it trimmed every 3 weeks and it was costing me a bundle. Mine is turning silver also, with the bottom half blonde. I almost got it cut a couple of weeks ago, but decided not to, or I'll be going every 3 weeks again. My hair is so thick and hard to comb out, but that is okay, at least for now.

Joining the club too. So far have shoulder length hair. Have same problem - thin, fine hair. But since I've been growing it out I have been using Nioxin products which are really great. I had the problem of my hair falling out and these products have really helped a lot. Nioxin has products for all types of hair (thick, fine, etc.). I get Nioxin from Amazon. My hairdresser also gave me some samples of a new product out by Redken - Intra Force for all types of thinning hair. Have only used it once, but going back to get the bottles of this stuff. Liked it too. I also get my hair trimmed once every four weeks which I think helps with my hair growing and keeping split ends away. |

I started growing mine out in 2008. It grows really, really slow, but it is now most of the way down my back. I keep bangs, and most of the time it is in a ponytail of some kind. I do color it every four weeks, because I have a really odd pattern of pure white hair that grows in just around my face and the crown of my head...the rest is still dark brown...so I keep it all dark.

I had super long hair, used to be able to sit on it... Then I decided to donate it and I donated like 14 or 15 inches. Then I grew it out again, got 6 inches cut off, now its almost to the small of my back. My hair is weird in the fact that its "thick, fine" hair. In other words I have fine hair but its very thick and also extremely heavy. I am going to get it cut so it will end up being a few inches past my shoulders because I don't look good in super short hair. I'm going to donate again this time. I also planned on donating my hair because it does grow fast so (I know it's not organic, BUT) I used Moroccan Oil on it and despite blow drying it sometimes I haven't gotten split ends!!! I personally can't use Olive oil on my hair because its both thick and fine and it's "too heavy" but I can use Sesame Oil. I use food grade organic sesame oil which is only a dollar or two more than regular sesame oil. Make sure you don't get toasted sesame oil.... That stuff is NASTY! :) The only thing I can think of as to why my hair grows so fast is that I eat lots of protein, fish oil, I get plenty of good calcium from my diet, raw milk and if needed a supplement, I also get a lot of "good fats" (like in coconut oil, avocados, nuts, etc.)I also have very, very, very limited soda intake. I do get highlights in my hair sometimes too. Using a proper cleansing/conditioning helps too. I use organic stuff and food grade is even better. My theory is if you wouldn't put it IN your body you shouldn't be putting it ON your body (or hair!). Also, how you blowdry your hair also makes a difference too, I Found out I was doing it wrong and causing myself to get lots of split ends. Oh, and when I do get my hair highlighted, they use all natural stuff on it that doesn't contain ammonia. Ammonia breaks down the protective protein layer surrounding your hair and sun damage can also wear down the hair and cause it to split and break. I have noticed using that morrocan oil I didn't get any of that last year and even this entire winter I never got static hair! yay! I hate static hair with a passion. If your hair is static it means it is too dry. But I guess that might be obvious. I've had long hair my entire life (except for when I donated it and went short temporarily) so this is what I've learned to work for me and I've had great success in it. My aunt has gorgeous hair and I've learned a lot of what I know from her too. I swear she never has a split end! Anyway best of luck in the growing out process! Sometimes it can get frustrating but hair does take a break from time to time from growing so don't worry, you'll get there someday! It took me 5 years to get from a pixie cut to my lower back. But now 5 years doesn't seem so long now that it has passed :)

I guess I'm the odd duck here as I just had my below shoulder length hair cut to a chin length bob. I love it shorter as it's not only easier to take care of but it also makes me look younger or at least that"s what I've been told. Funny that I showed up to my mother's home yesterday and she had her hair cut from the middle of her back into a "duck" style very short cut and she look sooo much younger and her attitude was so spunky.
hugs, -missy-

Another item I use for helping me grow my hair is Biotin tablets. My hair use to fall out horribly and since using the Nioxin products and the Biotin every day my hair doesn't fall out and my hair is growing out just great. The Biotin is also great if you have a hard time growing out your nails - mine grow so much fast and stronger now that I have to file them more often. Not bad considering that my nails before were just like my hair - very fine and weak. |

I'm growing my hair out too! I'd love to be able to put it in a braid without all the layers falling out. It used to be longer, but I got a perm, and I had to wait for that to grow out and then cut it off. Now I'm ready for long, lovely locks! It sure seems to take a long time, though.

Mine is just below shoulder length now...growing out from stupid layers (not sure what I was thinking!)It was nearly waist length three years ago..and I am going to go back to long...suits me better I think. But I do have bangs..longish ones. I have thick hair but very unmanageable with layers....so back to some weight to hold it donw..haha.

Dont throw things at me sisters but I am a stylist who is growing out my hair. Short or long - I tell my clients do what makes you feel best about your self. I ask for pictures if I dont know them as we all have different definitions of short and this avoids mistakes like you all talked of |

I am with you Krystle, my hair is thick but fine. I cut mine all off when I reached my goal at WW's. I wanted something different. I have had it short before but for most of my life it has been long. I was happy to see this thread because I am contemplating going long again. The only thing is when I cut it short everyone told I looked ten years younger, bless their hearts! But I sure don't want the long hair to make me look old again.

I just turned 60 and my hair is almost to my waist and is full of silver. Since I keep in a braid or knot, I find I'm not brushing it as often and pulling it out. I wash it often with baking soda and water and always use Silk Drops. Other days I use Suave products but always the Silk Drops. I don't think I could ever go back to short hair. |

Wow! I had no idea so many would respond to this post! Thank you gals for all the good suggestions. A couple of weeks ago i stopped using shampoo. I have been using baking soda and a AC vinegar rinse about every 3 days. so far so good. The vinegar makes my hair really shiny!

Annie~ Where do you get the biotin? Never heard of taking it before only ever heard of it in shampoos.
