Hi Linda!
Believe it or not, my home sits directly on the 45th paralell. . .same as Alaska!! Our winters are very simular too.
so happy you enjoyed the pictures. I just love seeing them and if they get out of hand ( trying to get the bird feeder or climbing onto our deck) I chase them off with a broom! Not advised for anyone to do, mind you. . . LOL!

Wow Joanna, great shot! I've only seen black bear in the wild when I was in Alaska. Hmmmm, beautiful, but not positive I would want them in my yard. Have to think about that one, unless of course you would lend me your broom....LOL
Thanks for sharing!

I would be afraid to go too far from the front door. I like looking a pictures of them, or in a zoo, but not in my yard.

LOL!! Well, bears are a natural part of life up here. This is a young male, I believe, he is curious and could be a trouble maker if you don't "teach" him the boundaries. Have not seen any bear cubs yet, only their tracks. . so we keep our eyes open. Don't want to get between them and Mama bear Here are a couple more pictures to share.

I'm not afraid of them, However, I do have a very healthy respect for them! I may chase them off with a broom, however, I am armed in the event we have a "challenger". We use a three round approach to problem bears, first shot is what is known as a "noise maker", second round is a rubber bullet into their hind quarters. . stings like a bee, the final round is, well, final. We have never used the rubber bullet. . so as you can see, the noise maker is all it really takes. Hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I enjoyed taking them!!

Joanna, Is that bear tagged? It looks like he has little things stuck to the back of his ears.
Thanks for sharing the photos. The scenery is beautiful!

I love this. We have black bears in Kentucky, but they haven't made it up this far north. He does appear to be tagged, which I understand is normal for fish and wildlife officers to do.

Thanks for sharing--Mother Nature is amazing!

I agree, he was comfortable looking around, however, he didn't find any food source and was met by me. . . which he didn't like! We learned early on to teach them the invisible boundry of our yard. If they respect that, they are welcome to pass through all the time, the ones that don't are met with the alternative.

I feel so bad for your horses!! Was it a grizzly? I cannot imagine a black bear doing that to a horse unless it was after their grain or was cornered.

Glad you enjoyed the pictures!

Wow, I was not aware you had that type of problem with the black bears.
Very scary at best. That behavior sounds like they learned it from a grizzly, since the two territories overlap one another near yellow stone, so a trapped bear that was relocated. .then had young ones, taught them how to hunt and the rest is history.

Thankfully, our bears are a nuisance, relocated from the populated areas like yours, but they are after things like bird seed, grain, corn and love to get into camps to raid the cupboards if they can! ( if they break into a home/camp they will be put down for safety reasons).

my son and I saw a bear a couple weeks ago on some property that dh and I own across the street from mil's. It was the first one ds has ever seen. The first time I ever saw a wild bear was here where I live. I was leaving MIL's and saw some "neufoundlands" in the road. I thought to myself, "who the heck down here owns neufies?" Population of my town is about 25 people, so I know who has dogs and who doesn't. Then it dawned on me, those aren't neufies, those are bears. It was a mother bear and 2 cubs and called myself a dumb a$$.

Wow, your pictures are so cool. Your info about the bears is all news to me. Never seen one, although there have been reports that they are around. You never know what to believe with "reports" from the neighbors sometimes.
