I heard of a recipe for bug repellant made with listerine and eucaliptus oil. What are the proportions and is there anything else that needs to be added? I want to use this on my son. I think he's allergic to bug repellant like repel and off.

I make my own essential oil blend using Lavender, Lemongrass, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Tea Tree Oil, Cedarwood & Citronella. I also add some Castor oil or Grapeseed oil as a carrier. 1 oz of each essential oil, 1 oz carrier oil to 8oz of water.
Another recipe I have used in the past: 4 oz of Avon Skin So Soft, 1 oz Citronella, 12 oz vinegar, 12 oz water

A friend of mine just uses peppermint oil and water and puts it in a cheap spray bottle. I've heard of a similar recipe to Michelle's and I'd probably try that one out. I had good success with the just peppermint oil and water but it doesn't seem to last very long and you have to reapply (but considering it's natural I'd rather keep applying it than put chemical's on my skin once!)

Lol this sounds crazy, but it works for my family! Drink a spoonful of vinegar, the skeeters stay away. I use apple cider vinegar, the raw stuff. It's amazingly good for you, too. Maybe eating salt n vinegar chips would do the same? Grace, my citronella geranium, the skeeters laugh at too. Lemongrass is the plant true citronella oil comes from And it's edible, you can make tea or put it in soup and so on. I wonder if eating it has the same effect as vinegar?
Smile, It makes people wonder what you're up to!

"skeeters B-gone! lol! maybe i will make a 'salad' of lemongrass & geranium & use a cider vinegar dressing .... or not! lol!
I did hear that adding cider vinegar to a dogs water dish will repel ticks... but I doubt getting a dog to drink a 'water/vinegar martini' would be tuff! lol!

I make my own due to being very sensitive to chemicals. I use 1 cup of water, 1 cup of witch hazel and 60-80 drops of essential oils from the following: citronella, lemongrass, geranium, tea tree, lavender. I make a mix that pleases me. Then shake it up and put it in a spray bottle. I wore some of this in the Everglades in July and didn't get bit! Plus, I don't get sick from poisons. If I want it to stay on longer, I mix the essential oils with organic soy oil, which is also supposed to discourage the skeeters. I don't use that when I have to be digging in dirt, though, because it makes the dirt stick... |
