I trimmed down our Knockout rose bushes about a month ago. Look at them now! There are a lot of new buds ready to open.

SO pretty, Marly! This year is the first time I've heard of knockout roses! I saw some the other night at Costco and considered buying a couple to replace my lilacs that didn't survive this past winter. I passed on the opportunity because I didn't really know anything about them. Are they the same as regular roses? Anything special I need to know? They're just so lovely! Thanks - Nini

Nini, they look different than regular roses. When they bud, the bud looks just like a rose bud. When they bloom the flower looks really different. I just love the color it provides. There are only four bushes planted. In Louisiana, the Knockout roses survive the winter. Usually in late March, I trim them down. Then in late September, I trim them down again.

Marly...those look like a true wild rose only the folaige is brighter green and the rose is a
brighter color on the Knockout! Very Pretty! Do they smell wonderful?

PeggyAnn: they don't smell as good as a regular rose. And- the bloom doesn't stay dark red for too long. I do like them, and they grow well.

Those are so pretty. They came back in really good form. They look like roses we had at the farm I grew up on. Pretty soon I can have flowers here.I hope!

Nini: They can grow really tall, over six feet tall. I keep ours trimmed to my height. Nancy, every time I trim them back, they come out much fuller. When you get your flowers growing, show us some pictures. Thanks.

Here is a close-up view of the Knock-out Roses. The buds look like regular roses, but when it flowers the petals, to me, don't look like those of a regular rose.

Thanks for that close up pic, Marly. I love knock out roses, too. They just look so great so fast. And the scent thing was something I thought about last year, when I bought some for the side of our house. I was picking out the bushes at Lowe's garden center, and I leaned over to smell them. Well, I ended up going from bush to bush and I found out that some have a scent, and some don't! I must have whiffed the entire display before I picked the ones I wanted. Those poor Lowe's workers, must shake their heads when they see me coming. :)

Thanks, Janet. I'd have to give the credit to my Sweetie (husband). He planted them, and usually is the one to take care of them. I mostly just water them.
Janice, I had to laugh at your comment about the "poor Lowe's workers". When we got the four Knockout bushes, I had the Lowe's man line the different colored ones up, so I could decide on a color I wanted. He was happy when we left the store!

Your roses are beautiful! I too got mine at Lowes and boy oh boy- they really are a "no brainer" rose bush! Very hard, and they just seem to keep flowering!
Ladies- for those of you who live near a Lowes- watch their pricing and if you can be patient. I bought some knockouts last year for a few dollars each. In fact watch Lowes for all their clearance. Here on Long Island, the 2 local Lowes have clearance racks which they are constantly filling up. I scope out the "full price" things that I would like to have and many times they end up on clearance for a few dollars each. Gotta love a bargain!

Laurie - Lowe's here in Louisville(at least the one I go to) is the same way about the clearance rack thing. I did the 'scope it out' thing last week, too. Just waiting for the ones I want to finish blooming, then.....clearance rack here I come!

this rose was highlighted in my Home Depot Garden Club email just yesterday. I remembered your photos and now I know what I will ask for for Mother's Day. I always choose a plant over cut flowers. Thanks for the inspiration.

The roses were wilting a couple of days ago, my hubby clipped them all off. This morning the bushes are full of new buds.
