Well, I told the family, it must have been a chicken hawk that took one of our barred rocks. So bummed.
We never had a problem with hawks, but get a ton of turkey vultures overhead.
About 2 weeks ago I walked out the porch to clean, and a large bird swooped down and under the porch at me (white face, tan body). At the time I thought it was an owl trying to get a blackbird, but I guess it was a chicken hawk. I only got a glimpse, as I was trying to get out of it's way.
I saw another tan bird, 1/2 the size of a vulture swoop down, and go out back yesterday. I took a look and saw my chickens in the bushes so I figured all were accounted for.
We can't find her anywhere on the 6 acres. She either got taken by the hawk, or crossed the road and got hit.
I had ordered 5 new chicks this year, but they were to come in 2 weeks ago. Each week I call they say "maybe next week." I'm glad I ordered them, so I hope they come in soon.
We also have had our egg supply dwindle down to 1-2 eggs a day. We are all talking about until my son happened to see a rat in the chicken coop. It's pretty secure, but had made a hole in the ceiling of the loft. From what I read, rats will eat entire eggs.
We fixed the hole, but may have to set traps. We just don't want the barn cats caught in them either. Ugh. The joys of farming.

Oh I am so sorry you lost one of your hens! A friend of mine has an egg business and a fox got into her pen and killed about 70% of her laying hens. I love nature, but I definitely don't want predators killing hens!!!

oh my girls how sad. it is a hard life for stock i would be devastated. i had thought before if i do pasture chickens again i will get heavier birds. not sure that helps either really. i took mine off pasture last week. DOGS shaking them to death. i am sorry for your loss. we do love our critters for sure. sending hugs sherrye

So glad that you found her! so amazing how well those chickens can hide. Bummer about the rat problem though...hopefully that is taken care of and those eggs will be on the uprise soon!
