The Urban Farmgirls met tonight at a local downtown coffeehouse for the monthly gathering.

Harvest Food was the theme and we had an amazing potluck and recipe swap. Focusing on the types of foods that are harvested this month/season gave us foods like:

• Acorn Squash Lasagna
• Autumn Cheesecake with Apples
• Apple Crisp
• Harvest Time Pumpkin Bars
• Sweet Pumpkin Dip
• Some sort of delicious apple bar that I didn't get the name of
• Zucchini Muffins
• Pumpkin Pie

Notice how that list is heavy on the desserts? I guess we can see where this group is headed - coffeehouse mochas and desserts at each meeting!

In keeping with our theme, our project for the night was to make dried soup mixes in jars to save for the winter months (or tomorrow, as some were already talking about making theirs!).

Everyone brought in one ingredient to share and we created our unique soups from the chaos on the table. We called it "Stone Soup" because "it is only by sharing that we may make a feast." (Thanks to Aunt Jenny for the fabulous idea of making dried soups!!)

We also collected items for the Emergency Food Shelf Network:

We've decided that we will collect foods for the EFSN at each gathering - share the bounty!

Looks like great fun Catherine! And I love the "Mini Farmgirl" along for the ride, start them young! The jars look great, no wonder people were going to use them right away. Glad you had such a good event and nice to see that the food pantry benefitted too!

There were FOUR babies present at our gig last night - and they were all farmBOYS! We all had a hoot over that one. I left my farmboy at home with his Dad though. At 7.5 months, he is Mr. Active and would not have let me put one bean in my jar. We were in a community room at the coffeehouse (it's great, free reservations, a huge table, comfy chairs in the corners...) so it was perfect for the babes too. Nursing stations and everything! Since so many of us are new moms, farmbabies are always welcome at our gatherings!

what fun! and the 'stone soups' are a great idea. somewhere i have a book that has tons of recipes for 'jar soup mixes' .. if i ever find it amongst all the books .. i'll post some of the recipes. now .. tell us some of the recipes you girls shared!

i love the idea of gathering for the hungry. it has always amazed me that most people's hearts seems to turn to charity only at thanksgiving and chrismas time. hunger truly knows no season.

oh keep sharing what ya'll do at each gathering!! xo

Tasha,

We meet at the Dunn Bros coffeehouse on 3rd Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. They have a great room upstairs for us - it was really comfortable and everyone bought mochas or other fru-fru drinks. What a treat!

How far out of Minneapolis are you? Would you be able to come and join us for a gathering? We'd love to have you! We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month and also have a bunch of "spur trips" planned for a few weekends in the fall. Check out our web site (you have to click to join) at http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/urbanfarmgirls.

Also, don't miss the No Coast Craft-O-Rama on December 2. We're going as a group! (http://www.nocoastcraft.com)

That looks like SO much fun! I just love how you combined doing something fun and productive for yourselves with doing something charitable for the food bank. That's true farmgirl style!!! I just love it - thank you so much for keeping us posted on what you gals are up to!
