My cousin sent me the cookbook that my grandmother used from the 1930's until the early '70's and it is amazing. My grandmother used it as a journal and a geneology chart. Just a wealth of information. Anyway, I made one of her recipes this weekend - a cake - and felt like I was in Little House on the Prairie because it looked just like one of those cakes!! Heavy and dense, but really tasty. I put up a new post at the blog about it, including some exerpts from my dad's labor of love book about growing up in the Depression. Would love to have you visit!!

Thanks, Jonni! It is really special. There are even comments from family members as they visited at various times. My dad even wrote a note on the day that he brought my mom home to meet the parents! Just a treasure. :-)

Here you go, Nini and Nancy, You can go to the blog and get a couple of the recipes that she has written down - one for a lemon pie and the other for a different kind of chocolate cake.

Oh my gosh, Mary Beth! I would cry to have recipes in my grandmother's own handwriting like that! Look at those pages!!! Such love must've gone into every facet of their wear! You must miss her so much, and yet to have her voice echo across the pages from the past and into your today like that - she is still with you, truly! What a blessing! Thank you for sharing! I'll definitely check out the recipes! There's nothing like a grandma's cooking, is there?

| Wow, Mary Beth, I think my mom has that cookbook - minus all the neat family history written in. How fortunate that your grandma wrote in it. Neither my grandpa, grandma nor my mom were much for writing in cookbooks, and my other grandma was from Italy, and as far as I know she never used a cookbook nor wrote down any of her recipes. What a treasure trove you have! |

| What a family treasure!!! One year for Christmas, I asked my grandmother to write out some of her favorite recipes in her own hand for me-I'm so glad I did! I use her stuffing recipe every Thanksgiving-those recipes are a way of connecting with her even though she's been gone for many years. It's these little things (like your grandmother's cookbook) that bind a family together! |

Yes, I am very fortunate to have this in hand. I am going to take pictures of each of the pages that she wrote on to keep them forever. The book is in really bad shape as you can see. My dad wrote a book about his life up through when he married my mom and it is a treasure too. Funny, but he mentioned this cookbook in his memoires. I posted that exerpt at the blog when I did the chocolate cake recipe of my grandmother's. She has another chocolate cake recipe that I am going to try next because that is the one that my dad mentions as what he remembers Grandmother always making. I have decided to start making notes in my favorite cookbook for my grandchildren.
