Hello Farmgirl Sisters,

Does anyone here know how to sew leather?
I have information on a sewing machine designed for leatherwork but I could use some advice before taking the plunge on such an expenditure.

Thanks!

Karen

I've sewn leather quite a bit, by hand and with a machine. What is it that you need to know?

Hi Phyllis,

Sorry for the slowness of my reply.

I'm just at the very, very beginning. Since my last post I have come across a different, less expensive leather sewing machine that I might buy.
It was used for shoemaking.

Can you recommend any books or online sources for learning about sewing leather? Is it really so different than sewing fabric, other than being thicker, tougher, etc.?

Many thanks for your help,

Karen

There are many things that are different, starting with seam allowances. You don't need them. I usually allow about a quarter inch, and depending on the thickness, you can't press them open. Also, you need to go a little slower when sewing leather. If you get a thread jam, it's hard to rip out. You might want to look into using linen thread, too. It needs to be a bit stronger than regular thread.

As for books, there are a lot of books available. I would check out the Tandy Company or Leather Factory. I think they are the same company, but they have a website. Here's their link. http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/home/home.aspx
They do have books for beginners, but make sure that it's a book that outlines sewing on a machine. A lot of books only tell you about sewing by hand.

Most of all, get some scraps and experiment. That's the best way to learn. And have fun with it.
