I'm wanting to plant a few Hostas in the front of our yard but I need advice on where to plant. I have a few reference books and even checked out 9 sites online but it confused me because one site says Hostas love shade but another site claims they need many hours of direct sunlight.
My front yard only gets the late afternoon sun. I 'm hoping a few of you have Hostas and can truly help.

I have had them all over. I think it depends on the type it is. There are thousands of hosta verieties. I think the ones with the full colored leaves can take a lot more sun than the variegated types. I just dug up about 20 of my variegated hostas that were in shade all day til very late afternoon and am going to plant them under a cedar tree that will get morning and eveing sun. They are pretty hardy plants so I think yours will be just fine. And remember they will need a little more water the more sun they get.

I have Hostas in both shade and partial sun. I have to say the ones that grow in full shade grow much bigger than the partial sun ones. I know of people who plant them in full sun, they just don't look very big... just a few leaves on a very compact plant.

I've seen some hostas get sunburned from the direct sun in the summer. The varieties I've known seem to do much better in filtered shady areas.

Shade is the way to go, just some sun is enough - they're happy! I have hostas in front of my porch, they only get early morning sun, and they do great!

I have hostas that get morning sun and hostas that get afternoon sun but dappled. They all do well. Hostas are not happy in hot burning sun their leaves can't take it and the edges curl up and brown. They like warmth but not direct sun. I have three different varieties. When I first got them I put them in large pots and then moved them around until I found the spot they liked best. Took a full season to figure it out and then I let them winter in the pots in a sheltered spot and then in the spring planted them in their permanent home. Now they are in their fifth spring and should show up in a couple weeks. Good luck.

I have over 11 kinds of hostas and they all are in the shade or partial shade. They are doing great! I had a couple that were in the afternoon sun and they always got burned so I moved them last year and they flourished.
