Tala "kissed" a porcupine and had about 30 needles in her chin. I got all but six out but some of them are in really deep. I am hoping my vet can send me a prescriptio for a sedative so I can get the deep ones out. I'll feel really bad if she has to suffer while her body pushes out the quills over time :( She also scraped up between her jawbones so I bought some ointment and put that on for her. Poor horse :(

watch for infection, those quills can cause one heck of one, plus it gets bad , she will not eat or drink...

Thanks ladies- tonight she was still eating and drinking and she didn't seem to have too much infection yet, but my vet is going to write me a script for a penicillian shot too I think. I just need to touch base with him tomorrow.

Poor Tala. How did she do that? She must have surprised it to get it on her mouth. I'm glad she is able to eat. I hope you can get the rest of them out soon.

Luckily it's that fleshy chin that horses have that got the quills and I don't think any have actually gotten into her mouth. I am surprised she is still eating actually because it seems like it would hurt to chew. I think she was trying to scrape them off when she hurt her jaw bone. It looks really raw. I am glad I went out today. I locked her up in her indoor pen so she can't get herself into more trouble now. She is not happy to be seperated from the herd but I think she will calm down once we get the last of the quills out. I am thinking of getting some DMSO since it is supposed to be good for localized inflamation and pain relief. I wonder if I could mix the dmso with orajel? Would that numb her chin for the deep extractions?

Alee If one clips off the end of the quill it will come out easier because the quills are designed so that they fill up with air in the tip so if one clips off the end it will deflate it and it will come out easier. However one does not want to do it if it will make it too short to pull out, and one will want to pull it out with out clipping it. It is very important to get them all out because they won't work themselves out. In fact they work their way in. They will go all the way through and come out the other side. I have seen dogs with them coming out the eyeball. Horrid things. I usually use banamine given by IV to manage pain in my horses, banamine given intramuscular can cause gangrene. Of course there is always bute that can be given orally but doesn't work as fast. I usually steer clear of giving my horses antibiotics unless I have to because it can shut down the good bacteria in their gut and make them colic. If I have to I give them yogurt along with it. Just my thoughts on quills. I hope all goes well. Ouch.

Oh those darn curious mares!! Ours gave a porcupine a good boot. Boy, I am really happy to have removed quills from her fetlock rather than her chin. Best wishes, sounds like a tough job. Please let us know how she does. And you!

Oh dear Tala!! I can't imagine having to deal with porcupines...we don't have them in our region. Domino ran into a branch of a thorn tree when he was a youngster and drove a big old locust thorn right up the center of his nose, between the nostrils. We pulled it out, but you know it was YEARS later, and I noticed a little pimple like thing where his scar was, and it was the tiniest bit of puss. I squeezed it out, and I never saw any evidence of it again. I guess it took THAT long for all of the bad stuff to work its way out of his body...pretty remarkable!

My vet says for the deep ones we should let them fester and when the pus pocket breaks it will take the quills with it. There are only 4-5 left but pretty deep. I am going to try blindfolding her tonight and putting something to numb her chin on and try to get the last few. I hate the thought of just leaving them in if I don't have to. I am sure she will be happy to see her friends again though.

get some drawing salve (it can be human brand), and coat the area with it everyday till they have all worked there way out, use neosporin when they do come out to lessen the chance of a secondary infection, and scaring, do not use hyrodgen perioxide, cause it can cause proud flesh, use betadine instead...you don't want to yank out those deep quills, they have reverse barbs on them, and can/will cause permenent tissue and/or nerve damage...

Oh poor Tala! I remember a camping trip many years ago and our original dogs were out running free and I heard one of them YIP! Back they came and my poor boy had 4 porcy quills in his muzzle! I still have them in a box. I can't imagine trying to pull out 30! 4 were bad enough! Hope Tala learns her lesson and leaves the porcy's alone from now on!

I used a tip I read online on a horse forum and blindfolded her so she couldn't see the pliers coming. That combined with the fact that she isn't used to being headshy really helped. A couple might have come out last night because I only found 4. I got the ones that were really gross looking (lots of puss and scabs)and two others. Ouch! I must say I am totally okay with not ever tangling with a porcupine.

Thank goodness Tala's okay now, Alee! You're a brave and loving soul - I was telling my husband about her this morning and we were discussing how painful that must be, and how hard they would be to remove. God bless you! Poor, poor Tala. Congratulations Alee. That is quite an accomplishment. I know you must be very relieved to have her free of the quills. Do you think she learned to stay away from those darn porkies? Ours didn't and she tangled again = fetlock both times.
