After many, many years of dreaming I finally got my first chicks! We brought them home yesterday and they're in our powder room for now. Keeps curious Cairns at a safe distance!
Two Light Brahmas and two Buff Orpingtons. I'm tickled pink!

Thanks Paula and Missy! Janet, don't give up hope! The very year I moved from my old hometown, the town finally passed a law that said it was OK to have chickens. But here in the country, it's a non-issue. Maybe work on your city government to see if they'll change their laws? Tina, I hope non of them crow either! They are supposed to be pullets but I know you can't ever be 100% certain until they grow a bit! Laura, I'm thinking of naming the Brahmas, Pearl and Opal and the Buffs Hazel and ???, maybe Golda? Thought I'd wait a bit to see if I'm going to be able to tell them apart. Right now they look the same (except of course the two different colors, lol).
Since DH didn't get my coop built I bought a cute little one online for their temporary head quarters until the permanent coop is ready for them. I'll try to post a picture of it tomorrow.

Debbie, oh yes, my little Kipper has put new life in our home. It's amazing how dull and quiet it is when there are no pets around. We are treated to pent up energy "zooms" most every night. They make me laugh so hard! The faster he goes the more tucked in his tail is, when he wants to slow down, up comes the tail!
He's fascinated by the chicks! When I go in to check on them he wants me to pick him up so he can see in their box. He just watches them. I may have to cut a side out of their box and put some plexi glass in just so he can come in and watch them. Cairn TV.
Sherrye, I was day dreaming this morning of fixing eggs for breakfast from the offerings of my new chicks! Can't wait, the thought of eating the store bought eggs now in my fridge kind of disgusts me!

store bought eggs on one hand, fresh from your hens on the other hand, just wait till you smell/see and taste the difference, you'll wonder how you ever ate the store bought, or as my Grandson says : "Fake Eggs"

Fake Eggs? Love it! Your grandson knows his eggs!
Well, here are the pics of the little coop we bought. Don't think it will house 4 grown chickens but it should get us transitioned between the house and the permanent coop (which is still waiting to be built).
 
We put it in the dog run that neither Hobbs nor now Kipper used. Don't mind the compost ball we had to put in the run to keep it from blowing to Nebraska! We'll get a cover for the run, place some chicken wire ground level around the inside perimeter, then bury some wire around the perimeter. Any other suggestions?

watch for snakes under and inside of the coop...useing small opening size hardware cloth for ground wire and to line the chainlink up at least 4 ft, will help keep most snakes out...

Thanks Tina. I haven't seen any snakes here but I just know they're lurking out there! I had thought about putting the hardware cloth on the underneath side of the coop, just in case mice or something would try to get in through there. Hadn't thought about snakes. I still remember one of the FG sisters posting last year of a snake in one of her nesting boxes. Yikes!

well i bet that little house will suit them fine for a good while. in the summer and good weather in other seasons they are out mostly anyway. it is way cute. i am happy for you

Hi! Congratulations on your little ladies! They're so cute!! I was just going to suggest maybe a little shade as the weather warms up. The heat can really get to them. But you already said you're working on an update as they get bigger so that will probably be part of that...anyway, cute little coop! Good luck with your girls!

Thanks for all the kind words everyone! I can't wait for those fresh eggs provided by my little ladies. I like the name Flora, Christine. I also like Ruby but that was my Gammer's name. She may not mind since she's the one that got me started on this life. I remember gathering eggs from her chickens in the summer as a very young girl!
So far Kipper and I have been enjoying watching these little chicks. They seem to be doing OK. They are getting their wing feathers and I've noticed the Orpingtons have little puffs on theire back end (tails coming in?) I haven't been able to find anything describing the sequence of feathering and approximate age. I don't think these girls are more than a week old but I bought them from a farm store so I guess they could be.
