I have used this for years and it is super. I do not warm my vinegar and it works just fine. Also after you get the scum off the first time you can cut the mixture with vinegar and it works just as well.

Another great idea I can't wait to try out. Have horrible hard water from our well and like you have tried so many things to get rid of the scum (yuck-o). Way cheaper too from store bought. Can't wait to clean the shower now. Thanks again for sharing. |

When I saw this post, I chuckled, because I had just mentioned to my DH that while we've gone to homemade cleaners and chemical free ones, I could not get our shower clean anymore! I really did not want to buy a caustic bleach type cleaner, but it was exhausting trying to clean it. When I saw this post, I had to try it as I am a big fan of all things vinegar. Holy cow! Made it yesterday and the scum and crud just oozed off the shower surfaces! It even cleaned the scum off the track of the glass door. It got my shower cleaner than any commercial product. Like Annie, I have horrible hard well water. I sprayed it on and left it about 15 minutes. Rinsed. Amazed, I did it again and left it on a half hour. I did use a scrunge-type sponge to help loosen the crud, but did not have to scrub. Cleaned the shower with very little effort. Thanks so much!

I, too, tried this just today. The mirrors are clean and streak free! The toilet bowl, my goodness- really clean! I've always used vinegar and water to clean the floors. Tomorrow, I will clean the shower. Thanks. Marly

I tried the recipe but did not have any dawn. I didn't want to make the trip into town. Its about 25 minutes and I drive a diesel truck...ouch on the gas. I will get some when I do my grocery shopping. Anyway I had some natural dishsoap(seventh generation) and used that instead. It worked really great!!!I am not sure if I even need to get the dawn but will try it to see if the results are any better. It took awhile to rinse all the soap down maybe sprayed to much. I wonder if I used more vinager and less soap would the results be as good? I am going to try that next time. I have to say I use natural cleaner for many things but I had went back to scrubbing bubbles because I could not get my shower as clean with the other natural cleaners I was using. Since messing up my right hand permanently I went back to the scrubbing bubbles because my hand just couldn't take all that time scrubbing 2 bathrooms twice a week. But with this stuff I can ditch ever buying it again and the chrome really sparkled. I am so excited cause those scrubbing bubbles make me choke and the fan running still doesn't help much with the fumes.
Thanks so much Peg for sharing the recipe. Thanks Nicole for sending me the recipe.

Tried this today and WOW! My steam shower has never looked as good as when we first had it put in. The glass door is so clean now. Did take a few buckets of water to wash it all down, but love the results. This is a keeper recipe. |

Woolspinner.........I have made this without the dawn and also with more vinegar and like I said in the bove post if you get things real clean then you can cut the mixture with more vinegar and it will keep things clean.
I also clean my washer tub with vinegar and only 3 drops of dawn per spray bottle.

Totally need to try this! I hate our glass shower door and it seems like no amount of scrubbing will get it clean!

Oh my Goodness, ok, Peg, I need to try this... We have hard water up here and so I have to really scrub the shower doors about every 3rd day... I need to try this. I have 'Trader Joe's brand dish soap, so I will try it w/the vinegar.... I plan to drive into town tomorrow, so I will stop in at the little local market & pick up a little bottle of "Dawn" and give it a try... unless my Trader Joe's soap works well.... Thanx for sharing this with us!

Thanks so much for this recipe. I have been trying to get rid of all the cleaners in my house and I couldn't find anything for soap scum that I could make. This will be the last product I have to replace.

I tried this recipe about a week ago and it worked great. I did not use dawn, I used whatever "earth friendly" brand it is that I can't remember the name of. After I cleaned the shower down, I also made shower spray to spray in the shower after each use. One part vinegar to two parts water. You can also add a couple tablespoons of diswasher rinse aid if you would like to. Makes for far fewer shower cleanings.

ABSOLUTELY GREAT !!
I used 1 cup warm vinegar and 1/2 cup blue Dawn. We have 37 year old hard water stain on the fiberglass shower walls. Got most of it off the first time. Mom used to keep it down to a dull roar, but alas I could never seem to get on top of it.
Well, the Dawn and Vinegar did a great job.. I told DH that he had to go and look at the tub. How come guys don't get as excited about these things?????
Well. Keep those ideas coming.

This sounds like a great idea. I plan to try it, if only on our tile, since we don't have shower doors.
Lora, I think it's always a good idea to launder shower curtains and, if possible, line dry them in good strong sunlight one every month or so. I have a custom-made cloth curtain that stays outside the tub, and a plain white silk liner (healthier than vinyl, quite sturdy, and surprisingly cheap) for inside. I only launder the liner. I think in 5 years, I've only felt compelled to clean the outer curtain once, at the dry cleaners. |
