Does anyone do square bale gardening? I am trying this year to expand the garden and I am going to give this a try. I had some blogs I was following about this but when Blogger made the switch I lost them and I was wondering if anyone might have some I could look at?

I think I read about this in either the Grit or Mother Earth News magazines. Maybe if you search their websites, you can find some info on it.
I had put some old bales of hay out to supposedly block weed growth one year, but instead, some old potato plants that had never been dug up, grew right up through the middle of the hay bale. It was pretty amazing.
From what I read...somewhere...it is great for growing squash too.

Pretty sure I just read this in Mother Earth News?
Cant remember exactly, but I do remember it saying that if you go new straw to wet it down for the first week or so, and then go ahead and plant in it. It did say it will require alot more water then a traditional garden since the straw doesnt hold onto the moisture. It certainly did look like an interesting idea! Let us know if you give it a whirl!

I've accidentally grown pretty good onions in straw. Left some bits of a set lying about on on a pile of straw left over from some other project. What a nice surprise!

I haven't heard of this before, I think I'll look into it, a little bit.
