American Sewing Guild has free meetups at meetup.com, in my area. I bought a book and machine when I lived 2 blocks from Joann fabrics. You Tube has some pretty good tutorials.
My first project was a simple sundress. An apron would be a good project, but buy a pattern. That way you will learn the terms.

try something really easy like a potholder
or a half apron.
look for patterns that say , easy to sew
or
fun and easy ,
don't give up with your first couple of tries .
Good luck ; hugs sheila

Amy Beth,

I just started sewing lessons (with CJ ). It had been years since I took sewing in high school. My first project was napkins, then onto reversible napkins and then napkins with rick rack peeking out :) I am learning how to sew 'curves' right now.

a couple cute pillowcases would be a nice first project too!

We taught our afterschool girls how to sew in the fall and they all made elastic waisted skirts.

I agree with Debra! Pillowcases are a great first project. Straight seems, big enough to get the hang of sewing straight and you can use them too!

Have fun!
