We recently got an Anatolian/Akbash guard dog for our goats and chickens. Her name is Salt and she is 9 wks old. It will be awhile before she is ready to guard.
My son also got a puppy for his birthday, she is a sheltie/poodle mix. Both are very sweet and we are enjoying them.
My question is for any suggestions as far as natural or organic controls for worms, fleas and ticks. I don't really like to idea of monthly dewormers or applications for fleas and ticks. What are some of your control methods |

Because fleas and worms can cause so much trouble I rely on products from my vet - it's just not worth the risk especially if the dogs are outside around other animals. You can purchase Advantage from most pet stores now - and it works very well.

I love those puppies! I know Anatolians grow up to be some very wonderful and no nonsense dogs for protecting your flocks, but that puppy looks so sweet now!! Wow. I've never seen the sheltie/poodle mix combo. How pretty!! It looks like she is showing more sheltie now than poodle.

The best product is frontline from the vet. Sorry. Haven't had any luck with anything but. As far as dewormers go, adult dogs rarely get round worms after they are treated a pups. They may pick up a tape worm, but that would be about it as far as GI worms go. Heartworm is passed from mosquitoes to dogs and cats through bites. If you live in a heavily infested mosquito area, you will want to test/treat for it. The hearworm medication will also take care of tape worms. I have never found OTC products for worms or fleas work. Sometimes, they can cause more harm than good. Stick with the vet approved stuff. At least you will have recourse if your pet has a reaction to it. Vets will not guarentee anything they, themselves, do not administer or sell themselves. This includes the first dhlpp/dh2pp vaccs that breeders often give their pups with out veterinary oversee.

Thanks for all the tips. The weather here has been so sunny and warm for early March, my boys have been outside all day playing with the pups. |

both are so cute!!! if you google beagles unlimited I believe it is you get some good advice about heartworm and regular worm stuff. I have been doing what they suggest and it has worked really well for me...

How can that precious little thing be expected to guard anything! I think that sweet pup needs her own guardian! What a cutie! And a sheltie/poodle what a sweet little lump of fuzz you have there! Are they called sheltoodles or poodlties? LOL! When I was young anything crossed with a poodle ended in xxxpoo (as in sheltiepoo).
Enjoy your days of puppyhood. They go by much to fast!
