I just discovered she is in heat. Ugh! This is her first one. I always get all my dogs and cats fixed so it has been years since this has happened. She is just a little over a year old. How long will this last? I was waiting on income tax money to come so I can get her spayed. Now we will have to wait at least another month I guess. Bubba is neutered so no problem there. And out yard is fenced. Bubba will keep any dogs away I hope. I just need to keep an eye on Stella. I will keep her inside as much as possible til this is over. I am not looking forward to this at all. I do not want puppies.

About 3 weeks, she will be fertile about 10 days after showing color ( bleeding) for 3-5 days...remember dogs will scent her for about a mile away with anykind of breeze, including coyotes...

She must have just started then, because I didn't see blood. She was a little swollen. So 3 weeks of this? Or just 10 bad days?

3 weeks of attracting males, and 3-5 days of ovulation, keep her in as much as possible, and as soon as she is out, get her spayed...alot of people will word it this way, " 1 week coming in, 1 week in, and 1 week going out of heat"...

I'm calling to make her an appointment for a month from now. It's been a long time since we've been through this. She has been really good so far. Very quiet. And not as active, which is strange for her.

Kristin,
Some vets will spay smaller dogs even when they are in heat. Check with your vet to see.

alot of vet's will spay when they are in heat, but it is harder on the dog, and the vet will charge more to do the surgery, it is more complicated...
