I never turn on my oven until I'm ready to use it. So many recipes start by having you warm it up, and if you are as slow as I am in preparations, that is alot of energy being wasted, for the sake of convenience. It only takes 5 minutes to preheat, but it may take you 30 minutes to make it. All that time is just wasted energy. In this time of "Pinching Pennies" a little tweak in behavior can save you money and our energy.

I got one of those easy to clean ovens ... the bottom electric coil is under a metal plate. So the bottom of the oven is completely smooth and yea, easy to clean. However, it takes significantly longer for the oven to come to temperature and it has taken some getting used to.

Just thought I would warn anyone looking to buy a new oven

I found an oven liner at Target for about $10. I forget what its made of but if something spills on it, you can just wipe it off. Keeps the floor of the oven clean and makes less work for me!

I save a little by keepin a meat scrap bucket for chicken skin and bones and such, a beef one, and a turkey one. Those make nice broths for soups. I also keep a vege bucket for the left over spoon or two of veges after dinner. I use large square ice cream tubs and they stack nicely in my freezer. I have enough for a huge pot of vege soup once my vege bucket is full.

A few tips...never keep flavored veges or buttered veges, makes the soup taste off.
freeze the meat scraps on a cookie sheet first so they aren't one large block, then you can make small amounts of broth when you need to.
save drippins or broth from cooked meats in their own containers for immediate use, if you don't can it, some small and some large

A friend was telling me about friends of hers who have their refrigerator so well organized that they only have to open the door for a split second to remove or replace anything. They do this to save electricity.
