| had some extra cash for a change so went to Joanns, so depressing the price of fabric there is so high I came home without buying anything. D o I have to give up sewing ? |

I find my local fabric store to be cheaper then JoAnns most times. Except for the black friday sales. lol But, I do have to get wovens there as my local shops here are even higher then joans, but the local knit fabric store is much cheaper! Any way...joanns does have a lot of coupons so I always just use coupons. the 40 to 50 percent off ones.

Oh no! Check out the thrift stores, re use old clothes and linens. There is so much out there depending what you are planning to make.

Let's remember that the cost of cotton is now at an all-time high due to fuel costs, etc.
I think what upsets me the most about the cost of JoAnn's fabrics is that they are now ALWAYS on sale. If they would go "off" once in a while, I'd use a coupon.
Also, if you want nice fabric at a reasonable price, I use Connecting Threads (www.connectingthreads.com). I usually shop their clearance section, and can get fabric for as low as @$3/yd. Their "high-price" cotton runs $5.96/yd and flannel is $6.96/yd. And it's quilt shop quality. You also get free shipping on orders over a certain amount, so I stock my wishlist every time I visit the site, and when I've got enough in there, I do a big order. They have wonderful customer service, and use American cotton to make their fabrics.
And, I agree with Carol - you'd be surprised what you can do with thrift store and Goodwill finds. I made a few Little Dresses for Haiti from a shower curtain I found there, and another one from some denim dishtowels from the same store. You can also repurpose bed sheets, shirts (dress shirts, flannel shirts, t-shirts), table cloths and placemats - the sky's the limit!

PS - Freecycle is a good source for items to be repurposed (and they would be free - you just have to go pick them up)
PPS - put the word out to friends and family - I just picked up a whole bunch of used denim for free that way
PPSS - put up a post here for a barter
I've also gotten lots of sheets and pillowcases and men's flannel shirts from Freecycle. Even with gas at $4/gallon, I still come out ahead.

Yes, cotton is extremely high right now. There were two bad harvests which is driving up the prices. Our local small town quilt shop closed because she didn't think she could survive here with the prices so high and the economy so tight. I am really glad that I spent the money to get a couple of bolts of white and cream cotton when I heard there was going to be a big jump in price. Another good source is garage sales - people clean out and get rid of fabric stashes - also estate sales.

Fabric has gone up..... I am "shopping" in my stash and making things work. Just think outside the box like everyone else has mentioned. If you look at thrift stores look at the larger sizes in clothing - more fabric for your buck. Let us know what you find.

I do like Jo Anns ; I too am frustrated about the prices .
I don't buy much as I have quite a stash left.
They can't believe that I don't buy as much as I did ; and one thing is they moved to another part of our town and fixed a Super Joann's ; the problem for me is they are far, far away .
it is within driving distance ; but I have further to go. living down here on a farm in the mountain .
hubby says that is a good thing they are that far away .lol
I have brought some fabric on line ; but not much, hugs sheila

I really try to keep an eye out on the thrift stores for fabric. I got 5 yards of a really nice green and white checked cotton last week for a couple of dollars.

I love thrift store.I go all the time an d find things to use and repurpose for something.And I certain days they have certain color codes that are like 50 cents. Its like Christmas when you so and a lot cheaper.

They have a clearance section. Also sales with additional percentage off the clearance.

| some good ideas and I like the idea of repuposing other fabrics into new things. I need kitchen curtains and some pillow cases. We only have Joann stores here , there aren't any other options unless i drive down to Amish country and I don't know if the prices would be any better. but I can always count on creative ideas from you so thanks :) |

Hello Patricia (pnickols) What patterns and colors do you like? I also love making pillow cases and usually buy fabric for this on the remnant table at a local fabric store.

Thelocal thrift stores have saved me several times in the fabric needs at the old ranch house. Just Weds I found 4 yards of new muslin for 50 cents. I have made several quilts using men's shirts because I like the homespun look of the fabric

Hi Tracy, wanted to make red check curtains for the kitchen and maybe a couple of skirts for summer. I have some awesome 1940's patterns I would love to make too. love the 40's

I like to shop at our local Goodwill. The items are all marked with a different color tag or barb and every week a different color is 50% off. Once a month, everything in the store is 50% off and now on Sundays they have a 99 cent sale on a certain color. They have started a loyalty program too with one of those little tags for your key chain. You save 60% vs the 50% on sales. I love to make things from linen, but it is way to expensive to buy in the fabric store. At the Goodwill, I can find dresses and skirts in just about any color I want!
I also hit other thrift shops, garage sales, flea markets and auctions. I went to an auction last summer that blew my mind! I just didn't have the cash! There were over 50 plastic storage totes filled to the brim with every kind of fabric imaginable! I was only able to buy 1 box of quilting notions and books. bummer!
Also check antique shops. Sometimes they have a selection of vintage fabrics and flour sack materials! I did find some of the flour sack material at a shop.

| my first order from Connecting Threads will be arriving on Monday- I'm so excited to see the fabric...ordered some Christmas colors to work on Christmas tree skirts for my daughters that are out on their own. I'll keep you posted! |

I went to Joann fabrics this week just to pick up some embroidery thread I needed. And I was surprised at how of stock they have now. Like almost all the colors I was looking for they were out. And then I noticed that there seemed to be least fabric on the floor to choose from. And the fabric they had was expensive. I wish wal-mart here would come back with there fabric and sewing department. I long drive for me to Jo-Anns for them to be under stocked. I quess I will order on line from Hershners from now on.
