Who on here has had experience with GSP's?? We have one that hubby bought at the age of 1 1/2 yrs that was trained to hunt birds. 8 years later, still intact (was considering breeding him when he was younger, but didn't have the money for ofa's and elbows), has the tendancy to take off for hours if not tethered and if under close watch, it's a constant where's the dog. We love him, but yesterday and a one day last week, he took off and was found 3 miles away. Yes, he's intact. Yes, he's a hunting dog. If we get him fixed, do you think this may stop or lessen the frequency of his jaunts? I know the hunting instinct in him will never go away. Hubby is not happy (very much an understatement esp last night) with him and hasn't been for a while. I won't give him up. I believe in keeping a pet until it's time to ease it's pain. Son is attatched. I know he should have been fixed long ago, but try getting that into hubby's male ego.

1, he's a hunting dog, 2, he's intact, at 9 1/2, neutering him will probaly not change him now, because he's hunting dog, unless he's following his nose to females in heat, and that alone in a farming/ranching area could get him shot. IMO, I would still get him neutered, and try running him on cable, or a large pen, or maybe a boundry collar...

Wilma is our GSP mix who will run for hours if she gets out. If you get close to her, she takes off running in the opposite direction. In the yard, within the confines of the fence, she comes when called...it is just that thrill of freedom and things to sniff that turns her into the elusive pup. She loves to prong through the tallgrass, so we put her on a 23 foot retractable leash and let her feel a little bit of freedom when we take her for a walk. I would still get your dog neutered to avoid any unwanted pups, in case he does meet up with a pretty girl dog, but that isn't going to be the trick to keeping him at home.

| we have 2 right now, they are females, but we also had a male for 14yrs before them. All have been great hunting dogs, but can't really be trusted to stay out alone for a long period of time. We used a shock collar on all of them & it helps to keep them in their boundaries. But the 2 we have now will still go chase a bird if they want it bad enough...so unfortunately, they can't be trusted to be free for long periods of time unattended, so we have a large kennel that they have to be in if we are not home & at night. |

So basically it's a breed thing. Thank you all for your input. I am still going to try to convince hubby to get him neutered. Hopefully it will help some
