I have tried my hand at growing herbs outside this year (I usually just do it in pots indoors) and have had something really strange has happend to my flat leaf parsley. It has grown straight up with a tall main "stalk" and the leaves have turned into long skinny leaves (almost reminds me of bamboo leaves). Does anyone know why this has happend? Did I do something wrong?

Do you think it could be a seed stalk? Is parsley one of those biennial plants that are leafy one year and produce seeds the next? I haven't checked my parsley lately - I grew some in pots outdoors and some in the garden....Now I'll have to go look at it!

| Brenda is right -- It is a seed stalk. With warm weather, the plant 'bolts' -- that is, it sends out the woody, tall stalk and begins to form blossom, then seed, so that it can produce the next generation. I always pinch off the stalk as soon as I see it, to force more leafy growth. You could probably prune it off even now, because with the cooler temps of autumn, you'd probably get more nice leafy parsley. |
