When my son was a baby, I used Burt's Bees Baby Bee lotion. It worked really well for me & it makes 'em smell sooo good! You can find Burt's just about anywhere nowadays!

A caveat about Burt's Bees: it has been sold to the Clorox company. I have no idea if this now means that the products are now made differently, but I noticed in some of their colored lip balms that one of the ingredients is synthetic dye. So if you are trying to raise the baby organically, you might want to check the ingredient list before applying it to your twins skins.

Sadly, I'd also heard that about Burt's Bee's products.

If you aren't going 100% organic, I used Dove white bar with my daughter and didn't have this problem. She was an October baby and I worried about dry skin. I used Aveno Baby lotion with oatmeal. I didn't bath every night. Just wash diaper area and don't worry about it.

Congrats and good luck.

Congrats on your baby sons, Arlene! I have four little girls (ages 1 to 9) and I've used soap for all of us from a family-run company that makes all it's products by hand and is about half an hour from where we live. It's called the Chagrin Valley Soap Company and they have a website: www.chagrinvalleysoap.com

Their Castile Calendula Baby Soap is amazing stuff - creamy, moisturizing and without any synthetics.

I've used California Baby Super Sensitive massage oils and lotions and also use organic olive oil on my girls to keep their skin from drying.

All my children have had this too. It seems each child gets it a little worse then the last. We tried rx, and all kinds of things, with DD1 after 6 months I broke down and bathed her with baking soda. One time and it never came back, with DD2 it took me two times of bathing her and washing her hair too with it. And with DS it's taken me several times. But, it does get better. But, that's all I have found that "cures" it and not just keeps it at bay for a little while.

Arlene,
Coconut oil was suggested to me by the OT for our son when I asked her about it. She has a few boys too and that is what she used.

Hope you are getting some rest.

Best of luck,
Laurie

Coconut oil is great for your skin, so it should work well. In the peds office where I work, we give tons of samples of the Aveno baby lotion and bath stuff that works really well also.

Congratulations!
I was told to use Dove unscented soap when DD was a baby. Of course, it is not tear free, so be careful if you try it!
I also like the Aveeno lotion for babies - unscented.

Thanks everyone for all the advice and well wishes. I've tried the coconut oil and ordered the suggested soap. I have Dove so I'll use that with the next bath. If the coconut doesn't do the trick I'll try to almond oil or the baking soda. Something's got to work! :)

Congratulations on your beautiful babies. Is the "problem" all over or just on their head? They are supposed to shed some skin. It's natural. Not everything needs to be "fixed." I would follow all the natural oil advice on here. Avoid products made with/from mineral oil or petrolatum. That means it was sourced from petroleum. The molecules are too big to be absorbed by the skin, so it blocks the skin's natural function of absorbing water. In essence those products actually cause your skin to dry out more.

Good point Julie. It's mostly on face and legs and could well be the natural shedding. I'm sticking with the natural suggestions and mentioning it to the pedi next time we're in. I'm just brand new to all things baby so looking for advice everywhere I can get it :)

Arlene - so glad to hear you ordered the soap - I hope you like their products as much as we do. The soap is creamy and can be used on your little ones' bodies and hair. It doesn't really suds, because it has no artificial detergents (and has no natural sudsing agents because it is extremely mild and moisturizing). It does an amazing job of moisturizing and cleaning sensitive newborn and baby skin and if you moisturize their skin with a natural oil directly after the bath, there shouldn't be a problem with dry skin.

Congrats again on your double blessing!

I don't wash my babies every day unless, of course, they need a bath that day. I do for sure once a week though. I use Nature's Gate organic baby shampoo and then I use whats left on my hands on their bodies. My first daughter started peeling that's when I quit bathing every night and by doing so quit the peeling and left her with nice baby skin. My son (middle child) peeled so bad his skin cracked even though I only bathed him once or twice a week (or more if needed) and I used organic extra virgin olive oil on him and after about two weeks his skin healed up nicely. I almost took him to the doctor because his skin was peeling so bad! Now my new baby is doing just fabulous. I noticed they rubbed the white coating into her skin and I'd say she has the best skin out of all 3 kids. Her face did start to peel a little bit as did around her wrists and ankles but some EVOO did the trick! I bet coconut oil would work well too, although I've not tried it. I also used evoo on some diaper rash and it went away within hours. I was surprised :) I too heard about the sell of BB to Clorox. I'm sad, I've heard of quite a few natural companies selling out to larger corporations. Pretty soon its all going to be owned by 1-3 people under a bunch of different names. Oh well such is big money. Good luck finding out what you like best!

Krystie, I don't bath these guys every day either. The coconut oil seems to be helping and hopefully the soap I ordered will be here soon.
Thanks all for all the wonderful advice!

Oh, and I use a baby brush to gentle scrub the dry skin loose first. That has helped quite a bit too.

Arlene - I meant to tell you that Chagrin Valley Soap bars are huge, so you would do well to cut a smaller piece off of the big bar to use, stash the remaining until you need it. I didn't bathe my girls everyday as babies (still don't with the 1 year old), either. Trust me, I wanted to, because is there anything cuter than a baby in a bath? However, I knew it wouldn't be good for their skin.

Hope your soap arrives soon and you like it as much as we do. They are a very small company, so sometimes the sending can be slower than with a major one. The wait will be worth it - their stuff is great.

I didn't wash DD every day either...every few days or so, and then a washcloth as needed for "spot cleaning". The nurses at the pediatrician's office always commented on her beautiful, soft, skin, but I was embarassed to tell them my "secret" of only washing every few days, LOL :)
