We are cleaning out my husband's parent's farm/house and I came across several boxes of canning jars. Some of the jars are empty but some of the jars still have veggies in them. There is no way of knowing how old the processed food is but I am guessing they are 10-20 years old. I plan on dumping out the food but my question is whether or not the jars (if in good shape-no chips, etc)would be okay to use for canning this fall? I know glass doesn't retain germs or smell and I plan on running them through a hot dishwasher. Any reason why not to reuse these jars? |

I used my grandmothers jars that were 15 years old.... and they were fine. obviousley new rings and lids. Quite the find. Canning jars can be expensive when your doing big batches.

absolutely no reason not to use them, they will work. I am canning with jars that are probably at least that old. As long as there are no cracks & check around the rim for small chips. I would say you got very lucky to find them. Now fill them up! |

Wow - what a find! By the way, the ones with chips in the rims can still be used as storage for non-food items. My grandpa used to use that kind in his machine shed for bolts, nuts, screws, etc. when my grandma had some that were chipped. I'm sure they would also work for bobbins, buttons, etc. I have one that I use as a coin jar to keep loose change.
