Has anyone had any experience(good or bad) with Penn Foster online program? I was thinking of taking a course, but don't know of anyone personally who has used this program. I have readl both good & bad reviews online. I was thinking of the floral design & the herbal studies. I am ready for a career change. We already have a seasonal greenhouse business, so if I could incorporate either of these within our greenhouse & make the money, I would love to leave my job. Needing a change of pace due to burn out. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I, too, have checked them out for floral design and have to caution you about learning such a "hand's on" career on line. I think you'll get better training and experience if you approach a local floral shop and ask if you could volunteer or work part-time as a trainee. I'd also look at the courses given by community centers, extension services and colleges' continuing education courses. I just moved from Fort Wayne, IN and IPFW has great educational courses in floral design through the extension service which has their office and classrooms on campus. These avenues are much cheaper and shorter courses of study. I personally learned by taking out books from the library and purchasing a lot on line through ABEBOOKS.com or HALFPRICEDBOOKS.com.

As for the herbal studies, this is a field that is offered by a lot of scammers. There is a great book by Penny Royal that gives formulas for any herbal remedy you could want. I was fortunate to know an herbalist years ago who gave me the book and taught me by taking me to her garden and explaining all the herbs and their uses. Good luck and keep us posted on what avenue you choose.

Thanks Nancy...I may check into IPFW, I am only about an hour & 15min from there, so I could make the drive. I was hesitant about doing these online too. I may just check into that. With our greenhouse & my experience there, I am sure I can "figure" things out since I do all of our combo baskets & pots & they all sell & get nothing but postive comments. But I have never done artificial or live arrangements & just kind of need the basics to get started. I will keep you posted. Thanks!

Winoa, I could get lost in book stores for hours, especially Halfpriced books. I have trained my 8yr old son too...he loves to read & could spend hours looking at the bookstores too.

Beth, I'm sure you could learn from all the how-to books out there. You cna also Google for a tutorial on how to arrange fresh or artificial flowers. You can learn just about anything online any more. Good luck.

I have taken a couple courses from them. One course I took I had to do certain hours online in their chat with my teacher and that teacher wouldn't give me credit evern though I could prove I was there and participated. So I couldn't pass on to the next assignment and they wouldn't let me make it up, so I had to quit my studies, and still pay the money. I am now taking the herbal classes and have not had any trouble. I hope you have better luck than I did.
