No, that is not a typo. Today I sketched out an initial idea list for handmade gifts. Since most take time this, I hope, will let me work on them throughout the year. I have two crocheted shawls that will take the most time and some smaller items I can do in between when I need a break. A few items will have to wait until summer/fall like the lavender honey and lavender sachets, but this way I have a plan. The hardest will be for the 13 year old boy whose into computers and snowmobiling.

Great ideas! I need to be better prepared so I stay ON BUDGET! My husband bought me a Janome sewing machine for Christmas and I am already planning on 2012 Christmas gifts as well as a few babies that will be here soon!

Laurie, a gal at church crocheted ski bands for her grandsons that ski. I wonder if that would be an idea for the 13 year old.

I am making handmade items this year, too. Mostly for close friends and family members that I know will appreciate them. But, my goal next year is to not spend a heck of a lot of cash--it just adds up and then you're right out, the day after Christmas, spending again.

| If you have an old time pottery near you they have wonderful Christmas gifts. I brought med. to large metal snowmen with a light for 5.00 each before Christmas. So I did very well this year. Even have a few left for next year. |

I started thinking about this too - we were good about staying on a budget and I did shop all year but there are just so many of us:) 4 kids plus significant others plus grandbabies, plus,plus,plus....
Anyway - I did a preliminary plan in my head - here's to 2012!!

I too have started thinking about homemade gifts for Christmas 2012. I have 2 quilts to make, a Detroit Red Wings one for my Son who has been a die hard Wings fans since he was 6 years old, he is now 35:-) Also my best friend who wants a lodge/wildlife quilt for her TV room, so I need to get started. Plus a lot of little things I enjoy making/knitting, scarves, prayer shawls, washcloths, socks and mittens, oh how I love to knit!
Good Luck to us all in getting it all finished for next Christmas especially Mommas who always have a full plate and little ones on their laps.

@Debbie, my husband is a Redwings fan, too! He likes ALL hockey, though. And you couldn't have said it best--I got very little done this year because of having a little one. I wouldn't change the time spent with her, enjoying her, but it sure does put a cramp on the creative part of me, or the part of me that simply needs two seconds to myself, now and again. I didn't even get any homemade "food" gifts done this year for co-workers and neighbors. I had to simply be "ok" with that, this year, instead of beating myself up for it.

I have two projects on the go already. A shawl (crocheting) for my sister and a quilt (Harley designed fabric) for my cousin. I'm quite excited about it.

Laurie, early planning is NOT a problem. In 11 months you'll be thanking yourself for being prepared! I've wanted to learn to make some knit and felted breton style hats for myself and I thought they would make great presents for my sisters and my Dad's wife for next Christmas. And I've always wanted to make as gifts some herbal vinegars from my garden and perhaps some solid lotion bars. I always wait until November then find I don't have time to let things "steep". Maybe by preplanning along with you I can get this all done and actually enjoy a Christmas for a change?

| this is so funny! I was just doing some stitching and my daughter Natalie said "I thought that you were done for Christmas?" I said this is for next Christmas- she just rolled her eyes- by the way she is almost 15 yrs ol!!hehehehe |

Hey Audrey - that felted breton style hat sounds great - do you have a pattern for it?
I think I'm going to make a quilt for my step-daughter - she has been hinting and I just found some fabric that would be perfect. If I start it this early maybe I will finish it:)

It must be something with the name! Lol. I am an organized person too and have to have all of my "ducks in a row". I think that planning NOW for NEXT Christmas is a wonderful idea. You will certainly thank yourself then. Besides- there are alot of bargains out there at this time of year, and you can keep things on your shelves just as easily as the store can! Sometimes once the holiday passes its hard to "think" about it again, but if you are smart you can cash in on some good supplies for next years gifts!

I'm with you too. I've been planning some of my gifts for 2012. I started an idea book so as I come up with gift ideas I write them down so I won't forget. I've got a quilt and a throw on my list that will take quite a bit of time. I am hoping to learn to knit gloves and mittens this coming year so I can make a few of those also.

Laurie, great idea to get thinking about Christmas 2012 while it's still all fresh in your mind. I hope that we can touch base on this through the year and encourage each other to keep working on our gifts....imagine how much fun Christmas will be next year with so many handmade gifts made ahead of time.

I am planning for 2012 as well! Now is when you get ideas, and I write them down in a journal. I had most of my gifts done by the first of December this year, and it was a great feeling.
I have 3 grown sons, and 2 grandsons. Boys are always a challenge when it comes to making gifts for them. I have started on 2 cross stitch stockings for my daughter in law and my second grandson. I have one hat knitted for one of my boys. In 2012 everyone will be getting a knitted hat out of my sheeps wool. That are my plans so far!
Keep up the good work ladies!
Oh I also write down gifts that I gave each year. Since I like to make things, it gets hard to remember what I have made for each one. Don't want to be repeating myself!

One project completed and I came up with another idea. I had some left over material and remembered my brother in law had been asking for a cozy for soda cans. Well, after seeing the costs of them, I think I'll make him a couple and it might turn into an idea for some of the other men in the family.
