We each open one present on Christmas Eve, and mine was a box of knitting books my son found second hand! ( He is 19!)
One is on Brioche knitting.
Has anyone tried it?
If so, please let me know if is is difficult, and starter tips, etc.

Mary, I have not tried it but have been watching it done on Youtube. I think it looks warm and cozy and want to do a stocking hat. They talk about getting the two rows down pat and you have it then!

I have also been looking at doing a project out of that stitch just recently. It doesn't look to hard. I am going to try a hat. lets all let each other know how it is going??!!

it's pretty, but imho, I hate ribbing anyway, so adding a step in making ribbing would just irk me lol!

I finished my other project and have started my brioche hat. I started with a small hat that is in the round and is using the half brioche stitch. I like it so far. I will post a picture when I am done. I am only using one color but it is a varigated yarn so it is different colors. well so far so good. I'll let ya know more when I start to decrease!!! hehehehe

I have done some brioche knitting recently. It is reletively easy - especially doing it with one color, piece of cake really. The
two color was a little daunting until I finally understood when to knit two together, and when to purl two together. I wasn't lucky
enough to have a book to show how to do it, but I did research it on the internet and was able to figure it out. For the one
color brioche, after you have done the first row (the set up row), its basically make two of the one stitch, and make one of the two stitches. Elizabeth Zimmerman's book Knitting Without Tears shows how to do it with the one color, on straight needles using
a chunky wool or any yarn, on very large needles, and using 36 stitches to make a hat. I made two for people this Christmas. If you need help you can email me. i think the confusing thing is when it says to yarn over, you will bring your yarn forward and just lay it over the top of the right needle (taking the yarn to the back) at the same time you are slipping a stitch purlwise - the yarn over is not wrapped around the right needle, just laid over the top....those are the two stitches that will be knitted together the following
row. Knitting with two colors so that one color is on one side and another color is on the other side is a little trickier because
sometimes you will purl the two stitches together, and sometimes you will knit the two stitches together, and that depends which
color you are using and which side you are working on. I made my dd a white/gold scarf for Christmas using the two color which
uses two dpn. I did the hats holding two or three different colored strands of yarn together (using the one color method) and they turned out quite pretty. It is a very stretchy stitch. Good luck to you - peaceful happy relaxing knitting to all.

well my little baby hat is done but I had some hard time when it came to the decreases. I think I read the first line wrong and it messed me up for the rest. It came out ok but I am not sure I would like to fiddle with this again. the ribbing part was easy but I too am not fond of doing ribbing of any kind and then the decreases sent me into not so much fun. let me know what the rest of you think when you do yours.

Beverly, sorry it didn't turn out as well as you hoped....lots of work i know and then be
dissappointed.  Life (and knitting) can be like that. I made a brioche stitch hat for my dh and when he wears it he looks like a sultan, some sort of swami, like his head is wrapped up - makes me giggle a bit. oh well. I did make myself a brioche scarf which turned out terrific, and the brioche scarf and hat I made for my dd turned out well.
I knitted a cute barn bonnet (not brioche!)for myself and my dgd and a neighbors little girl. The barn bonnet has an additional flap around the bottom that keeps the back of the neck warm - its has a rather old-fashioned look to it. In addition to the flap around the bottom, I extended it to the front on each side so that it has like a built in scarf all around it! If anyone would like a copy of the pattern you can send me a sase and i'd be glad to send it to you. Oh, one question, do you all use your right hand or left hand to hold the yarn - Continental or English method? I do the continental way and I can do ribbing all day long with no problems. |

Hi again,
I wrap with my left hand. it isn't the wrapping that get annoying it is the putting it in the front and then in the back. I would love to see a picture of your hat that you made for your GKS that sounds cute. Mine are kinda too old for that and besides they live in california so don't need the warmth we do here in michigan. heheheheh but would love to see it just the same....
