Woke up this morning with my jaw swollen really bad and pain worse than labor (as I remember it). Turns out I have not been to the dentist in more than nine years but remember that I was supposed to have a root canal in a tooth that eventually fell out. Since I don't have a dentist and my physician is going out of town next week I called him this morning. He said to come right in. He said I have an abscess in about three to four teeth in a row. Put me on penicillin and Vicodin for the pain. I obviously need to find a dentist asap. The pain is unbearable after three hours on the Vicodin and sometimes it doesn't work at all. Ambesol does nothing. I am grouchy, in pain, and need some sleep. Do any of you have remedies I can try to get me through Christmas?
Once the antibiotics kick in it will be better. The dentist I worked for always opened the tooth up to let the abcess drain and then put the patient on antibiotics if the root canal couldn't be done right away. Hope it starts calming down. Kathy
The tooth needs to be drained ASAP. But with the hoidays a dentist is going to be hard to find. Take the antibiotics. Rinse with Listerine, or warm salt water. When you don't want to take the vicodin...take tylenol then 2 hour later take motrin. Keep something in your system.
Once the antibiotics are working it's not a big issue to get it drained as the infection is clearing up but it will flare up again if you don't get it taken care of in the near future. Glad to hear that you are feeling better. Kathy
Connie, hope your pain is lessened. I had a tooth that abcessed and I remember it being the worst pain I've ever experienced. I just remember laying in bed moaning and tears running down my face from the pain. Hope the antibiotics are doing the trick now and letting the Vicodin do it's thing. My last dentist (couple of months ago) told me I could take Ibuprofen along with the vicodin when I had a similar episode. They work completely different so can be combined if needed.

Hope you are well soon! Clove oil will help with the pain. It numbs the gums. Found at the health food store. For future reference. I take olive leaf in capsules and it helps kill the infection in the gums. If used on a regular basis it will keep your from getting an abscess again.
My husband says salt rinses and rubbing the gums with salt is a good remedy. He had to do that years ago to heal his gums.
I have a trip to the dentist for deep cleaning coming up next month so I am hoping they will get it right this time and not waste my time and money again.
A tooth abcess is different then a gum infection, an abcessed tooth is the nerve of the tooth dying from infection or trauma. Salt water rinses will indeed help the gums as will Gly-Oxide (found at the drug store) but it isn't going to do much for an abcessed tooth.
sorry to hear you've got more than one problem at a time...I hope you're feeling better quick! I was wondering if anyone knows how much this kind of problem costs to fix?
Depends on which tooth as back teeth have more roots and what you crown it with after. It probably varies from area to area too. I still get a professional discount to don't know what the actual charges are. Kathy
Connie I hope your abscess is better. My husband had two root canals last week and he is just now feeling better. Keep us posted. Hugs to you. Marly
