here's a fun little project to make: apple pot-pourii sacks
been picking apples off the trees and ...
===========
frying them in butter and brown sugar
(didn't use any 'particular' measurements .. jus' a chunk-a-butter and a hand-full of dark brown sugar .. no special temperature or time either .. (i do declare .. i think i'm finally getting the 'hang' of this 'cookin' thing!!!) ... which will be MUCH to the DIS-BELIEF of my family and Maryland gurlfrenz!!! MOVE OVER MARTHA!!!! oh my .. what a yummy country taste from our very own farm!!
==================
i also cut up some white 'gourds' .. and more of those apples that fell to the ground .. and dried them in the oven 200 degrees .. until they are nice and DARK .. then sprinkled them with cinnamon, pumpkin spice and cloves the white gourds give a slight 'contrast' in color to the "pourii"
this is the size i cut the chunks into
==================
this is what they look like after they are thoroughly dried and sprinkled with spices (i 'bought' the orange slices')
=========================
made cute little homespun 'bags' for them ... (added dried apple slices and orange slices to the mixture too) tied 'em up with linen twine and 'sweet annie sprigs' (ordered some fabulous little 'grubby candles' from Paula Oakes Rusty Pins and Old Lace Charming & Unique Handmades for your heart & home http://www.rustypinsandoldlace.com to also tie to the front with olde rusty wire! ====================
another view of the little 'apple bags' you can also make fabric 'envelopes' or 'purses' for these by simply doubling your fabric .. you might want to line them with a nice olde grunged feed-sack to make it more primitive .. then you fold it over 2/3'rds and sew the sides up .. then flap the top over .. add a vintage button and linen twine to button it up with. or you can do a cute 'hanging sack' to put your apple-pourii in. sew a double fabric rectangle .. add a generous 'pocket' in a coordinating homespun to the front .. two little hanger loops at each side of the top .. and VOILA .. a prim country touch for your kitchen .. and it smells good too! =============
my 'gnarley' apples offa' the ground ... in an olde tin pail. when i first saw these .. being from the 'city' and buying shiny, polised apples most of my life .. i said "EEEEWWWW!!!!" .. first year i was here ... my neighbor up over the hill told me they were great cookin' apples ... for pies and frying. i still let them just 'rot on the ground' for the critters to eat. on monday, kathy sugarbucket and her honey eddie were here and she, too, told me they are great 'cooking' apples .. and all i had to do was 'cut the worms' out .. and fry up the rest YEAH!!! like THAT is going to happen!!! sooo .. i picked the ones off the TREE .. that weren't serving as a HOME to the worm population ... brought those in and fried 'em up .. DEEEEEEELISH!!! i'm slowly but surely going back to my 'country roots'! the ones on the ground are GREAT for drying for apple-pourii though! Nature's Gift!!!
the apple-pourii sacks make a nice little 'hostess gift' .. or when you gather with friends ... present each with one of these (i'm making these for our September Gurlfrenz Gathering as a little giftie for each of the gurlz.
AND .. they are a wonderfully quick little project 'filler' for when you do 'shows' to sell your hand-dids. hope you'll find a nearby apple orchard .. go pick your own (with permission of course!)and try the fried apples and the apple-pourii xoxo Frannie Meshorer CABIN CREEK FARM

I really want to do this, but before I do it all wrong, a few questions. Can I just dry the apples on a cookie sheet in the oven, I see in the picture above, frannie used a screen, I think. The apples were not pealed right? and will any apples work, even green? |

OK, the way I'm reading this, the butter n' sugared apples are for eating. The dried gourds and dried apple bits are for potpourri, right? Seems like I need to get back to my country roots as well -- it really confused me at first! |

the gourds and pot pourii apples are the 'lesser' ones .. that i surely wouldn't eat!

When I was in college, I used to make applesauce out of the windfall apples I found on the ground near campus. And I'm a city girl!
I like the potpourri idea. Will have to try it with some sour wild apples I know of. I'm glad they are good for something.
