I stopped by a local produce stand today and got fresh corn and apples. It was the sweetest place -- no one was around but there was a big sign that said "leave your money for the produce in the jar. I trust you." So that's exactly what I did. Got 10 ears of corn and 5 lbs of apples for $3.50!

Came home and peeled the apples, got the filling all mixed up, poured it in the crust and put the crumb crust on top. Just as I was opening the oven door to put the pie in the electricity went off! Seems someone hit a power pole about 2 miles from us.

I also had chicken breasts thawing and corn ready to boil. So on to Plan B. Put the pie in the frig and decided to wait. Hubby came home and suggested we cook the corn and chicken on the grill. Never cooked corn on the grill before so this was something new. Slathered it with butter and salt and wrapped it in foil. We decided to do the corn first then the chicken (we have a very small grill). Out he goes to put the corn on the grill and the electricity comes back on! I put the chicken in the oven and he continued to cook the corn outside. Was one of the best suppers I've had in a long time. Even had fresh tomatoes to eat with the corn. The pie got delayed until 8 and just now came out of the oven. If it cools off enough I'm having a piece before bed. YUM!

oooh...corn on the grill...one of my favorites. I just peel down the husks, take off the silk and wash the corn and then slather with butter and pull the husks up over the corn and tie with jute twine or a strip of corn husk and then grill or put in the coals if we have the fire ring going...yum!! That sounds so good right now..even though I haven't even had breakfast yet!! I am glad your power came back on in time to have pie too!!

To roast corn on the grill, we ease the husks back, remove the silks, close the husks back over the ear, and soak 30 minutes in water. Then we roast, and the water soaked into the husks steams the corn. At big gatherings there's always a tall tank of butter for dipping, and the corn goes from the fire to the butter pot. An old fashioned salt shaker that looks like a tin can with a handle is usually tied to the butter pot with jute baling twine. A couple of shakes and you're done.

I think you were pretty resourceful to think of going outside to finish up! Now maybe Santa will bring you a bigger grill.

Well ladies I have 10 more ears of corn. I'll be trying your methods tonight. Love love love corn on the cob. But Missy & I both agree that the corn around here doesn't hold a candle to fresh IL sweet corn!! I miss that terribly.

Kay -- Yes, we're in sweet corn heaven here in Illinois. Nothing like it! There's a new corn grown out near Sycamore, I think, that is touted as the sweetest sweet corn yet -- I'm seeing it in the market, and some folks drive out to pick up bushels for parties. Lots of it is shipped to Japan!

That's too funny, Kay! Isn't that how things always turn out? lol
I always do corn on the BBQ in the summer, and I always soak it for about 15 minutes before hand, so the husks don't dry up and burn. I had that happen once and it was kinda scary!
