Now What??!!
My daughter has been asking me to buy pomegranates for 2 years now. She tried them in her 4th grade class and LOVED them! Problem is: I really don't know what to do with them. She says she ate the seeds. Is that right? If so, is that all you do with them? I guess what I would like to know is.. What creative and/or yummy uses are there for pomegranates??

I bought a pomegranate for the first time this fall too. I was a little intimidated by it, but just thought, "Well, I better hack into this and see what's inside." I found it to be really interesting and quite enjoyable harvesting all those bright red seeds. My family all gathered around to try one and then couldn't stop popping them in their mouths!
There are some salad ideas for them online, but my family loves to just eat them as is! I would imagine, that you could throw them into any kind of salad. They sure are beautiful!

You eat them a little like tiny seeded grapes. Pop the seeds into your mouth, chew/suck on them for the pulp and juices, then spit out the little seed kernel. They're really addictive!

We too eat them out of hand, but they also go in salads, salad dressing and fruit juice smoothies. They are so healthy for you.

You don't have to spit the seeds out do you?

I made pomegranate truffles last weekend & they were yummy! (http://www.browniepointsblog.com/2006/02/10/pomegranate-truffles-shf16/) I also have a recipe for pomegranate quinoa (from MJF magazine) but have yet to try it.

I cut them in half and then dig in. Messy, messy, messy but, oh, the best, if you get a good juicy, sweet one! The pits if they are not quite ripe!
I eat the pulp and seeds. Everything down the hatch. Really cleans you out, if you get my drift. Poms are supposed to help protect against cancer.

So I shouldn't wear white is what your saying!! How do you know if it's ripe? Is there a secret to picking them out?
Thank you all so much! I am going to print out the pomegranate truffle recipe -- sounds Delish!

Yup, nix the white, or, really, about any color. Your fingers will end up a nice maroon-y color, too. Tear the halves apart!! They are sort of clumped up inside, grab a clump and bite in! Didja know the bottom "star" always has either 5 or 7 points. Right off the bat I can'remember which it is.
I've read where you can immerse them in a bowl of water, then cut and tear aprt. Um, no...that's not fun.
