For those who are interested,
http://scarvesforspecialolympics.org/states

Be sure to check your state's deadline, and also if they are accepting more scarves. For example, my state (IL) has a deadline of 12/16, but they are no longer accepting scarves (they have reached their goal). So, this baby is going to Arkansas - they were VERY short of their goal!

that is a great idea, I have never heard of this. Now all I need to do is learn to crotchet or knit. Every winter, I say I am going to learn, but don't really have a plan. Maybe this could be my motivation to learn so I can do some for next year.

I have a friend who crcohet scarves for the special olympics every year and has such a fun time doing it. Great idea Ann! I'm hoping after things get settled down with moving I will be able to start on some scarves. Or maybe it will have to wait until next year. Do you know at what point they change their colors for the year?

Beth, I just posted a tutorial on my blog for learning to knit. It's called The Nine Days of Knitting, and you make the scarf pictured above. Hoping to do a crochet tutorial after the first of the year.

Amy, I don't know for certain exactly when they change, but I do know they are different every year. I've done this for a few years now, and the first year, the colors were soft white and a delft blue. Last year they were royal blue and turqua (the best name for a color EVER!). This year, they are soft navy and cherry red.

My biggest wish is that they would let us know earlier in the year what the colors are going to be, and then, if the state reaches its goal, donate the scarves to local charities - one charity helping another kind of thing.

Anyway, happy stitching, all!

Bumping this with a random thought:
If you knit/crochet and have kids/grandkids/neighborhood kids, etc. who would like to learn to knit or crochet, Christmas break is coming (and fast, too!). Why not spend some quality time with them over their break and teach them? This would be a great project to keep little hands busy for the full 2 weeks, and hopefully out of (insert adult here)'s hair. Even if a bunch of yungin's made a few patches of different colors, the pieces could be stitched together to make one scarf.

Just a random thought.
