I was hanging out laundry today and I noticed a hawk circling over the yard. My chickens were in their pin. I was wondering if it could have been looking for them. Lately, every time I let them out of the pin, they head for the bushes. Cathy

Yes. We get more buzzards than hawks, but have had them fly very low once in a while. Typically, our roosters warn the hens to run for cover.

Yep. Depends on the size of the hawk, but they can definitely carry off a small/med sized chicken.

I know a hawk that carried off a Rat Terrier.

Well, thank ya, that explains why they have been acting so skidish and run from one place of hiding to the other in the yard. I'm glad we aren't neat yard freaks or they wouldn't have anywhere to run to.

Oh yes they do. We have hawks and eagles regularly checking out our "deli." I'm thinking a hawk is what got one of our rabbits.

Oh yes hawk just love chicken & will dive down & grab them so if you see a hawk stay in the yard where you can watch it...many times if it sees people out near the chickens it will go elsewhere but if really hungry they will slowly work they way down where they can target one chicken that is away from the group....anytime chickens run & hide they are in fear of something.....yeap they like rabbits, small cats as well.....Michele'
