We've been having issues with our current flock of chickens laying. We tried everything and anything we could think of all year. Last week it was time to thin down the flock from 25 to 12. I kid you not, since we butchered, now we are finally getting eggs again like we should be. My mom was wondering why they would suddenly start laying MORE after the flock was cut in half. My dad joked it was because they figured out if they didn't start laying, they'd be in the stew pot. ;) Anyone have any ideas?

That is odd! I wonder if it is just coincidence of timing but I too think your dad's explanation might have some merit! LOL

One or two of the hens may have been egg eaters, and when you culled, you may hve butchered the culprits...

From the sounds of it there may have been too many of them & they were under stress though they acted normal....Some may not have gotten as much feed as they needed since they were low on the pecking order...Even if they have plenty of room in the coops they can feel stress when they are trying to eat, drink water or move around.....Usually if your whole flock is not laying they are not getting enough protein in their diet or calcium to help develop the eggs.....With half of them gone the stress level has dropped, they have more room to move & eat so they have turned their egg making parts back on....Michele'

I put a pair of black swedish ducks on my cull list because they bully all the other ducks, I suspect that those two are preventing my viable layers from doing so. This will be my first backyard bird Christmas dinner here, so wish me luck on it :)
