My 12 year old son fractured his wrist on Tuesday - so we are dealing with a cast. I have never had one so I'm not really sure how to deal with this intense itching he is having about mid-way up his forearm. The cast goes from around his hand to half-way up his upper arm. The cast specialist told us to put baby powder in there but I can't get the powder to the place where it itches. They also said not to stick anything in there to scratch the itch - but with they way the cast is placed, we wouldn't be able to get anything in there that far anyway (around the curve of the elbow or the way the hand is turned). Any words of wisdom, sisters?

Benadryl. I had a cast once that itched like crazy. It's from the old skin cells not being able to shed. I used to stick a skewer down and itch. Benadryl will help the itching and it is safe to take. I think they have children's Benadryl.

It's terribly dangerous to stick things down into the cast to scratch. I know! I broke my wrist a couple of years ago and had a cast on up to my elbow. It was awful! I broke down and did some inserting, but if I'd known how easily I could get Q-tips with cotton on only one end of a long wooden stick (ask at the pharmacy counter), I'd have used that.
