For those of you who do not know, NAIS, National Animal Idnetification System was supposed to force the national registration of ALL animals in the US. This was supposed to be done to protect the safety of the national food supply. Every cat, dog, parakeet, hamster and all other domesticated animals were to be microchipped (at your expense,of course) and fines for "unlawfully leaving your premises" ie emergency trip to vet, or your dog got out, would cost you. Also, if you wanted to butcher a chicken for dinner, you would have had to call a 1-800 number and tell them at chicken #123 was going be butchered, and why. Every town meeting here in Texas overflowed into the parking lot of every facility they tried to use. I sent a letter to my governor, Mr. Perry, opposing this and got a form letter back telling me, as a rancher he understood the need for NAIS, and I should just go along with it, because it would ensure the safety of the national food supply. There was so much opposition that the federal government has pushed this back to the state level to deal with. Hence, states messing with small farmers on bogus chargers. If you have time, go to the website, read what is going on and do what you think is best. I personally oppose the NAIS in all of it's forms.

This is unbelievable. Most states are already struggling financially (to say nothing of the Feds), and they want to push something as micro-managed as this through? Anything to kill the family farm, apparently. The farms and businesses this will hurt the most are NOT the ones threatening the "national food supply."

What a load of horse poo! I am not microchipping a chicken! This garbage has GOT to be stopped! Why don't these people worry about the economy and jobs and such and quit messing with the darned small farmers & urban gardeners????

I did a search on NAIS because I had never heard of it. Thank you, Kathryn, for bringing this to our attention. I only read the overview and certainly not enough to see every detail of it, but it appears to be something they are trying to put in place to have better control/accountability for diseases when a flock,herd, or whatever is being sold/transferred from one farm/ranch to another, in case a diseased animal is sold into a healthy herd? is that what you all got out of it? However, so many times a law that is intended to help with a problem, ends up being abused, misused, and the little guy/gal always pays the price of it. However, also, there is a tendency to overreact - how are they going to know when my chickens hatch babies, or when I decide to fry one up for supper? Are we now going to have farm police to watch our every move? Well, there are some more government jobs! Maybe next they will decide one of us has too many chickens and make us give some away to the guy next door who was too lazy to raise his own chickens. Sheeessshh!!!!!

If you have not been keeping up with the sheep & goats thread, I would encourage you to go to page 114. The comments are along this same line, it is very frightning. Do we really live in a free country?

Once you are registered, you have to give that number every time you buy feed, they would track the amount of feed you buy and estimate they number of animals you are feeding. More feed bought, more animals would prompt a check of your premises.Less feed bought, you would have to prove where the animals went.

I remember when this first came out. Farm folk here were outraged that the government would even think of tracking our livestock. Small farmers are not the problem. Large corporate farms are the problem. I think the government should start enforcing the laws that are already on the books instead of turning the other way because the corporate farm gave someone a large campaign donation or hired a fancy lobbyist.
