I love, love, love to make dolls. I didn't start until a couple of years ago when I signed up to make a Christmas dollie for a swap here. I was fairly new to MJF and didn't understand the concept of a "dollie" so I made a beautiful 24" doll and sent it right along. About a week later I got my dollie and was really surprised. HUM She was really a dollie ( a very primitive dollie). OOPS Well I considered it a lesson well learned. HAHA But, anyway, I was hooked. Since then I have made 11 of these dolls and given all of them away to my Mom, my sister, neices and oh I can't remember who else except for mine. I also entered my doll in the fair this year and she won 1st place and a best in division. WooHoo She is a completely cloth doll with a hand painted face wearing her fancy dress with a fancy apron and bloomers. All of my dolls have names as this is one of my requests. My granddaughter Emily named the first one "Molly Grace" so since then they have to have a name. I'm going to make 3 more for 2 of the ladies at my church for Christmas presents for their neices and a granddaughter. Love, love, love it.

Donna, Monique, please do send pictures. Donna, there are so many different ideas about dolls, aren't there! I will try to send a pic of a different doll I am working on, one of many UFOs in my sewing room. She is all cloth, from an old (80's) Better Homes and Gardens Magazine. Just need to get my camera working. She is all cloth with hand embroidered face. She's been sitting half finished for years - maybe by posting her here I will get busy and finish her. I'm also working on a gourd doll, still different from anything else I've done. They're all fun. Oh, guess I was having a senior moment last night, that was not Dora, that was Edith. Dora is a different doll. Edith and Fred are the box dolls.

Hi
Glenda, I love your doll. She is so pretty. Donna and Monique send pics of your dolls. I will send a couple of pics of my dolls that are all cloth. I have designed most of my dolls. I woould like to make so dollies. I like that you name all of your dolls. I haven't done that with the last few dolls I have made. I would like to see the gourd doll. That is very interesting.

The doll on the left is call The Artist. I made it for my granddaughter who was 8 at the time and taking art. She took art lessons all the way through high school and is now in college. She decided she was interested in forensics and is studying criminal law. She still continues her art though. I designed the clown a few years ago and have given some out as gifts and have sold some. Some of people who I have sent the clown besides family members are Dakota and Ellie Fanning, Martha Stewart, Ralph Shaw, Gene Wilder.

Nancy, I LOVE YOUR DOLLS!!! They are so original, cute, and I can see they are very well made. Thank you for sharing with us. What a treat! My earlier dolls were all made from patterns, and at the retreat where we did the box dolls, we all started out with the same boxes but all the dolls were original. I didn't really know what to do, so it just came out of my head as I went along. I thought the features should be exagerated, so I made her with a bigger nose, middle aged, and her story sort of came out as I went. I love to sculpt the heads from polymer clay but then I don't like making the armatures and bodies so much. Now I'm trying to finish this cloth doll that I started long ago when I wasn't even into making dolls, and I now see the face is off--so I'm trying to convince myself to go ahead and finish it. I'm so bad about abandoning a project when it doesn't go well rather than push through and finish it. then a year later I'll pick it up and think "well, it really isn't so bad after all". Then, I look at an art doll magazine where some really terrible stuff got published, and I think, yes, I can do this. So, even when it comes to dolls, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, huh. My biggest frustration is not being able to find time to go work on them.

So sorry not respond before; a living room out of service due to being painted! You all do such great work!
The Waldorf-style dolls are fabric, with the intention being that the natural fibers and less-defined features leave rom for children to fill in with their imagination. The head is shaped, then covered in a flesh-colored fabric; wish I had pictures, but my kids are all ggrown up, so the dolls are packed and await grands! I have a couple of great-nieces, and my best friend's dgrandchild is about to be born (in Moscow, ID!) so I will make some for Christmas!

Oh I just love this thread. I havemade all different kinds of dolls over the years. cloth, porcilian (sp) cabbage patch, but never the ones with polimer clay. those are beautiful. but I have one right now all cut out and I just need to get motivated...maybe this thread will help me. I would love to keep this going and learn and share, great idea!!!

Thank you everyone. I am loving your Edith and Fred, Glenda. They are the nicest couple and what a life they have led. I know what you mean about the dolls waiting to come out and being patient as they wait to be finished. Yes, they are each have their own personality. Your dolls with the crooked faces have a personality that goes with that crooked face. I have some dolls like that. As I make my dolls I am always talking to them. I think that helps me to decide on their face and how I am going to dress them.

I am looking forward to seeing your dolls, Monique.

Hugs to you all

Nancy

anyone have a pattern or instructions on making the body to an old fashioned china head doll ? I was thinking just a rectangle for the body and the thinner rectangles for arms and legs ? is that about right ?

Patricia, I don't have a specific pattern for that but you can go on youtube and find just about anything. Also, try Dollmakers Journey.com or google dollmaking they might have something that would work for you--would depend on the size of the head, style you want, lots of things. Do you want it to have an armature or just a soft body? Hands and feet? Another thought is to look at other dolls and see if you find an idea you could adapt for what you want.
hope this helps to at least start you in the right direction. Let us know how you do.

I used to make a lot of dolls. This is one of the few that I have left. I brought her out of storage when I set up my craft cave.

I used to love making these dolls. I have two teenage boys, but when they were younger, they had a lot of friends who had sisters and I used to make these dolls for the girls. The little one's espcially loved them because they were cuddly. I found this one tucked away. I think I am going to put her in my craft room.

Where did everybody go? I hope you are all busy making dolls because now I am inspired!

I have made only one doll so far -- thanks to Nancy and her kindness in sending me an unintimidating pattern. I have many dolls - but less than a dozen hand-made beauties.

I just discovered this thread because I'm fan of Glenda's and decided to check out where she's been. I was delighted to find she had started this thread. Lots of fantastic info here!

I'd like to get into dollmaking myself. On another site I'm on there's these cute Poppit dolls some are making. I bought the supplies but that's as far as I got. I collect the cloth bunnies in dresses. I put them up cause my girls kept taking the dresses off. Lost an arm or 2 as well. Hopefully I can put them out soon, now they are older.
