We were gone for a couple of weeks just as tomatoes ripened so I was thinking that I wasn't going to be able to put up ketchup and sauce this year. However, one of my favorite farmers was able to still pull together 30 pounds of tomatoes. Not only that, but he brought them to my house!

We had a rather short summer here in the northwest this year and not a very good showing in our produce. Fortunately, the fall rains held off just enough.

My boys are so excited because they really didn't want to go back to store bought ketchup. Off to process tomatoes!

Yummy homemade ketchup!!!That is one thing I have never tried. Is it hard to make?

My mom tried homemade ketchup one year, but it was icky lol. We didn't eat it, being young kids. It was thin, runny & didn't taste like ketchup at all! And my mom used to plant a billion tomato plants, so when the first frost hit/cooler weather started, we'd have washtubs & rinsetubs & baskets & boxes - anything you could put tomatoes in was used! - full of tomatoes. To this day, I can't stand the smell of tomatoes. It just makes me gag. But I always think that if I could plant a few tomatoes (when I finally get my own garden), I'd make some salsa & homemade spaghetti sauce. Not a huge fan of anything else with tomatoes, especially "chunkies" (although I can eat salsa with no problem lol).

Have fun!

Wendy- we ran out of ketchup here in the early spring (due to a bad tomato season last year) so DH and I started using the pizza sauce I had canned for ketchup instead. We liked it so much I put up extra pizza sauce instead of ketchup this year.

It is actually fairly easy to make, but it does take a while to cook down. The first batch I made was on the runny side because I was too impatient. I generally cook it down for almost two hours.

We've tried a couple of different recipes, but the one my family likes the best is from Blue Ribbon Preserves. I'm not sure...can I post a recipe from a cookbook here? Does that break copywrite?

I just finished up a dozen pints of pizza sauce last night. We make pizza every Saturday night so I need a few more batches! So, so good though.
