My poor old basset Tiki, is 17 and gets so cold out in the winter, especially her poor paws. I just looked at some boots for her online and they want $40 for them! So, I looked around and found a pattern. I'm a thrifty critter and keep lots of scraps, so I've got a lot of stuff to work with, I'll have to buy velcro, but that won't be $40 at least. If anyone else wants to make dog boots for winter, here is the pattern I'm using

Thank you, thank you! I've been thinking here lately that I need to make my 15 year old (his birthday was yesterday!)Cairn some boots for this winter. He didn't have any last year and I think he was close to frost bite a few times. These look like they will be fairly easy to make too. And the bonus is she gives training tips on how to train your dog to wear them! I'm going to need that...

I wondered about that too then saw she used vinyl. I've got a couple of unused table cloths I thought I'd cut up for the soles. I don't think my pup will care!

Kristina, that is a good question! I'm trying to think if I have something just laying around the house that I could use. I think I'll go thrifting and pick up an old windbreaker for the bottoms myself, it won't be very slip proof, but it should keep her feet dry. I'll keep thinking about the soles and post if I come up with a better answer

Hmmm...why couldn't you make the boots out of the windbreaker and then line them with the fleece? Best of both worlds?

These booties work great I'll be starting my 3rd winter with them. Here is Sierra our first winter with the booties...
I made the booties longer and have added another elastic and velcro strap. Since then I have re-made a bottom for the booties...
and a few new sets,
they work well as long as it's not sloppy wet. But sure is nice to have clean dog feet and no cold toes when it's sub-zero for potty breaks! I'm working on suspenders for the front booties as they are the ones that get pulled off ramming around. My recommendation is use bright fleece as if they come off you might be able to find it. My first shorter pair were out of grey fleece and we lost two never to be found!!! I use non slip PJ feet or slipper fabric and seems to work ok. They do wear out, but the upper lasts very well. Non slip fabric is available at fabric stores, I bought the package at our Ben Franklin here in Chippewa Falls (oops now it's Hometown Variety store instead of Ben Franklin!!!).
