We had a huge windstorm the other night that knocked down ALL of my apples. We have maybe 50 stuntded little ones left on the tree now. The apples never get big. We are lucky to see baseball sized ones so the fifty remaining would make only a couple quarts of apple sauce and they are all over a large tree so the work involved to get them would be silly. The ones that fell aren't worth salvage because the bruise will have ruined a half to a quarter of the apple. I didn't water the apple tree this year and you can tell by the apple size. How disappointing

Oh Alee I am so sorry about your apples. Being an avid gardener I know how disappointed you are.
I just planted 3 peach trees in my garden area. They were an anniversary present from my DH. With in a week those colorful large grasshoppers were on them eating up the leaves. I had to go to Tractor Supply and get some spray for fruit trees and spray them. The trees were $59.00 each. And the spray was $14.00. I so hope I get lots of peaches off of them next year. If not I will never ask for fruit trees for my anniversary again. Ho, Hum so we will just have to wait and see! Maybe next year you will have better luck with your apples! I hope so, I hope so.

Alee, windfalls make great applesauce. Why aren't you using them?

Lillian- The apples are only a bit bigger than a golf ball each due to drought through the summer. Once I cut away the wormy areas and the bruise I would have about a sliver of apple each. As much as I love the way our apples taste- that is too much sticky work for so little return :(

Alee, can your horse eat them? My cows love apples. I give them the not so good ones. I am kind of in the same boat. Not many apples this year. What the chickens and Mockingbirds ate, we got about a half a bushel of the old red apples that are so good. The Granny Smith has alot though. Just waiting a little longer for them to ripen. Chickens don't mess with them I guess because they are green. But anything red better watch out!

A friend and I are going next week to an apple orchard to get 2nds to make cider. I am so excited! I've been saving containers for this.
