Has anyone seen this program on PBS? Our station has been running it for fundraising but it is the most undocumentary documentary you would want to watch. This very quiet spoken, gentle man went to live in the Alaskan wilderness and homestead. Over a period of time you see him build cabins, fireplaces,etc hunt, fish and live a relatively self reliant life.The rhythym of him talking while you watch him going about his daily chores is mesmerizing and very enjoyable. Watch it if you can!

I saw it just the other day and was so impressed! Wow. I hope it comes on again. I missed the beginning. My husband and I were just glued to it and talked about it long after. I was so amazed at all he accomplished all by himself. Especially when he made the door hinges, carved the spoon and roofed the cabin with moss. And all the little carrying "cans" and willow things he made too. Wow.

We watched it too. Can you imagine??? I can barely pound a nail in straight. This man was blessed with wonderful talent. I kept picturing myself with his cabin as my farm's office. I wouldn't change a thing.

I think I was just fascinated with how adept he seemed at everything and how at peace with himself he was. A lonely existence for sure but he never seemed that way. It was also nice to hear at the end that the park service preserved his cabin and allowed him use for as long as he wished. He left for "civilization" when he was 82! Imagine that!

Bramble I am so glad you mentioned this show. I have seen it four times now. Every time I see something else. One of the things that really stuck in my mind was the hinges,handle, and lock he made for his front door. What an amazing man.
Some people would probably say that he was crazy for what he did, I think it was awesome. Can you just imagine getting up every day to a new challenge. And the silence, oh how wonderful....

I have not seen this show. I enjoy PBS programming, it is usually the only telvision I will watch. I hope it is going to be broadcast in our area. I am going to check out the local PBS station website.

I loved that program also,The one think my husband kept saying throught the whole thing was, how could he live without the warmth of a woman that long.lol.

knittingmomma, i really liked the website, and i like the old wooden toys because i remember playing with toys like that when i was a child, but they are hard to find today. The best part about those toys is that they are sturdy enough to last no matter what you might put them through. Thank you for reminding me of the memories we sometimes leave behind, until a time such as this brings them back.
