I was on I-20 and thought I'd drive my big rig through the old town and show hubby what it was all about. My aunt/uncles last home is now abandoned. One of my horses, about 35 years ago clibed up on the porch and fell through. My aunt came running out and asked my mare was okay, more concerned about my horse than a silly porch. My mare was fine but she never climbed the porch again.
Went on thru town and saw the old tree that was a sapling in my grandparents time. A roud snaked around it rather than dig ithe trree up.
Then over the highway and on out to the 2nd oldest homeplace. It was a little tricky, that road wasn't made for big rigs!!
Found it and the hous is still standing. The barns are gone but all the pastures are there. I was sort of a
fraid some developer had built houses but thankfully not.
The old hous is well over 100 years old. The front gate is still there. The old tree that one of the ranch geldings wiped me off is still there.
I couldn't get to the oldest homeplace as it's miles off the road and dirt paths to boot. I'll bet the homeplace has totally fallen by now. Maybe some day I'll get to go one more time. I wanted to buy it years ago but the menfolk wouldn't let me. The reason?? I was/am a girl and they wanted it to stay in the family name. Still annoyed over that after all these years!!
Anyway, just thought some of you might like to know about today!!

I'm inspired by this and some other posts to take a drive. My Granny's house is about 45 minutes away. She passed away 11 years ago and I packed up the house and it was sold. Since the huge Bastrop fire the week before, I've been wondering how that house was and if it was damaged or still looks the same.

good morning girls, reading your post made me feel all sentimental. i did a drive like that once alone. i remembered marshfield high and sneaking cigs. out back. saw all my houses i grew up in. i have no history like yours. so is the land on the one piece still in the family name? you sure get around winona. happy days sherrye

Where in the Texas Hill Country? My dad's ranch that I spent my childhood is there, too.
