As I was putting up some produce from my CSA today, my mind started thinking of a new merit badge. I didn't see this anywhere else - what do you think?

CSA Put Away
Beginner
Learn how to freeze produce from your CSA or garden.
Put some up for the winter.
Intermediate
Investigate different methods of dehydrating foods.
Try dehydrating some of your CSA or other fresh produce.
Make a dish for your family using some of your dehydrated veggies.
Expert
Read about the different methods of canning food, learn the appropriate method for different types of food.
Can some of your CSA or other veggies/fruit for the winter.

Sounds like a good merit badge. I think you should send it to Mary Jane an ask about it.

The "Self Sufficiency" badge is similiar to what you're talking about. If you contact Chelsea, the Merit Badge Coordinator, she'll let you know the possibilities.

Hi Tamara!

Like CJ mentioned, I think the Self Sufficiency badge in Farm Kitchen is close to what you're looking for. Here is a link to the requirements:
http://www.farmgirlsisterhood.org/badges-fk-self-sufficiency.asp
It's not exactly the same though, and I like some of the different elements you brought up. I will make a note of your idea so we can explore it further in January when we add the new badges.
Thanks!

-Chelsea

Chelsea, yes I went back and looked at the self sufficiency and was mildly embarrased to not have noticed it before . Glad you like some of the elements and hope you will use them. Hope all is well in your new position.

what about utilizing wood heat for heating your home/cooking? Maybe have a badge where you learn about the different types of wood, wood indigenous to your area, cut and season your own wood, cook for friends on the woodstove...
